  • The size and principal characteristics of a new ship are determined primarily by its mission or intended service. In addition to basic functional considerations, there are requirements such as stability, low resistance, high propulsive efficiency, and navigational limitations on draft or beam, all of which influence the choice of dimensions and form. Within these and other basic constraints, the ship’s structure must be designed to sustain all of the loads expected to arise in its seagoing environment.

  • Roman theatres were complex buildings, closer in design to modern theatres than Greek ones. The seating was arranged in a semicircle around the orchestra as in the Greek theatre, but the stage and scene building were joined to the auditorium and rose to the same height, creating a sense of enclosure more like that of a modern theatre. This sense of enclosure was made more emphatic by the fact that some smaller theatres or odea were roofed and larger ones often had awnings (vela) overhead to shade the audience.

Anyhow, the November number of Loudon's Architectural Magazine for 1837 opens with 'Introduction to the Poetry of Architecture; or the Architecture of the Nations of Europe considered in its Association with Natural Scenery and National Character,' by Kata Phusin. I could not have put in fewer, or more inclusive words, the definition of what half my future life was...

  • The illustrations chosen for this issue are all from the Byzantine Romanesque work in the province of Apulia, that portion of Southern Italy familiar in school-boy memory as the heel of the boot. Writers upon architecture have found it difficult to strictly classify the buildings of this neighborhood, as in fact is the case with most of the medieval architecture of Italy, although the influences which have brought about the conditions here seen are in the main plainly evident.

The province of Apulia has been so little invaded by the march of modern improvement, and its present inhabitants are, as a rule, so poor, that it is difficult to travel here except on the line of a few main thoroughfares, and strangers seldom visit more than one or two of the principal towns on the coast. Bari...

  • I would like to confess that at eighteen I suddenly fell in love with Romanesque architecture, and the passion has stayed with me forever. Unfortunately, while the last part of this statement may be true, the first part, however romantic, is fundamentally distorted. The under- graduate art-history teachers at Columbia University initiated and nourished my interest in Romanesque architecture, and thoroughly shaped my approach to it. I must begin a book on this subject by thank- ing them.

  • Mutual funds are one of the several options that investors explore for investing surplus funds. In a deposit-dominated market like India it is important for mutual funds to be able to offer differentiated risk-rewards and gain shelf-space. With many seemingly similar offerings from multiple mutual funds unable to clearly communicate their superiority, a less informed investor may find it difficult to make a choice. This uncertainty leads to a weakened ‘pull’ for the product.
