As game developers a few years from now, we may look back at current generation AI with
astonishment and possibly with a hint of nostalgia. We will notice the extreme simplicity of
the systems and behaviours we created, asking ourselves whether it was in fact by design
or more by necessity. More importantly, we will be surprised by the amount of time taken
to prototype such AI.
Although the rediscovery in the mid 1980s of the backpropagation algorithm by Rumelhart, Hinton, and Williams  has long been viewed as a landmark event in the history of neural network computing and has led to a sustained resurgence of activity, the relative ineffectiveness of this simple gradient method has motivated many researchers to develop enhanced training procedures. This lecture introduces you to the fascinating subject of classification and regression with artificial neural networks. In particular, it introduces multi-layer perceptrons (MLPs); teaches you how to combine probability with neural networks so that the nets can be applied to regression, binary classification and multivariate classification; discusses the modular approach to backpropagation and neural network construction in Torch, which was introduced in the previous lecture.
