  • "This book is a timely collection of reviews of fundamental processes in the compartments and chemical components of the cerebral micro-environments...its contents prove rewarding reading for the neuroclinician." - Clinical Neurology and Neurosurgery "The book targets researchers, graduate students, and educators who face constant challenges on how to modify the external environment of a specific neuron in order to obtain specific behavioral results. The author is a credible authority on the subject but I think the scope of the book has an audience beyond that proposed by the author.

  • PreSchool-Grade 2–This ambitious book provides colorful collages, hidden letters, word pictures, and alphabet sentences presented in rhyme while avoiding many of the pitfalls of the genre. By melding together nonsensical sentences that are as wacky as the illustrations, Cleary opens up the field to using verbs and adjectives as well as nouns. E is for each evergreen Elvis potted. K starts karate and kangaroos kissing, and kilt-wearing kittens whose kickstands are missing. Both upper- and lowercase are highlighted. The pre-title page invites readers to play along.

  • After the wild success of Maya: Secrets of the Pros, we began thinking about the future of the Secrets books. Although it was originally conceived as a single, stand-alone work, it was obvious that a large audience was hungry for information from those who do professional 3D work on a day-to-day basis and that we should feed this appetite! Many “second edition” books are simple rewrites of the previous title; not so with Maya: Secrets of the Pros, Second Edition.

  • This is a slim book, but it contains a wealth of information. The author, a veteran science writer, tells us pretty much everything we need to know about her demanding field. She discusses finding the story you want to tell, conducting the research, and developing the story structure, and she breaks each down into its component parts. In the chapter titled "Research and Interview," for example, she discusses the proper use of press releases; how to choose your interview subjects (and even what time of day is best to conduct an interview); and the importance of being able to spot...

  • This Introduction was published in the Swiss newspapers in December, 1917, with an episode of the novel and a note explaining the original title, _L'Un contre Tous_. "This somewhat ironical name was suggested--with a difference--by La Boëtie's _Le Contr' Un_; but it must not be supposed that the author entertained the extravagant idea of setting one man in opposition to all others; he only wishes to summon the personal conscience to the most urgent conflict of our time, the struggle against the herd-spirit.

  • Wilfrid Laurier was born at St Lin, Quebec, on November 20, 1841. His ancestral roots were sunk deep in Canadian soil. For six generations Quebec had been the home of Laurier after Laurier. His kinsmen traced their origin to Anjou, a province that ever bred shrewd and thrifty men. The family name was originally Cottineau. In a marriage covenant entered into at Montreal in 1666 the first representative of the family in Canada is styled 'Francois Cottineau dit Champlauriet.

  • It will perhaps be said, and truly felt, that the following is a morbid book. No doubt the subject is a morbid one, because the book deliberately gives a picture of a diseased spirit. But a pathological treatise, dealing with cancer or paralysis, is not necessarily morbid, though it may be studied in a morbid mood. We have learnt of late years, to our gain and profit, to think and speak of bodily ailments as natural phenomena, not to slur over them and hide them away in attics and bedrooms. We no longer think of insanity as demoniacal possession, and we no longer immure people...

  • Monument of a Hittite king, accompanied by an inscription in Hittite hieroglyphics, discovered on the site of Carchemish and now in the British Museum. The object of this little book is explained by its title. Discovery after discovery has been pouring in upon us from Oriental lands, and the accounts given only ten years ago of the results of Oriental research are already beginning to be antiquated. It is useful, therefore, to take stock of our present knowledge, and to see how far it bears out that "old story" which has been familiar to us from our childhood.

  • In this work, all spellings and punctuation were reproduced from the original work except in the very few cases where an obvious typo occurred. These typos are corrected without comment. In the original work, monetary pounds were expressed as an italicized "l." after the number. For the text version, I am using the more conventional £100 form for clarity. In the original volumes in this set, each even-numbered page had a header consisting of the page number, the volume title, and the chapter number.

  • At the time of his death, Petrie had completed early drafts of two or three chapters of a book which was to have been called 'The Developmental Physiology of Plants', and the above quotation from Plato had been placed at the beginning of Chapter 2, 'The Change in Dry Weight and Leaf Area, and First Steps in the Analysis of Growth Rate'. Unfortunately the book had not reached a stage from which it could have been completed by any of his colleagues, and we had to content ourselves with placing the quotation on the title page of a bound volume of Petrie's papers in plant physiology for the...

  • The book you’re holding in your hand (or reading on the screen) owes its genesis to a tongue-in-cheek exchange with Steve Fleischer of Flying Tiger Web Design (www. flyingtigerwebdesign.com), who suggested I should write Powers Object-Oriented PHP. Actually, he phrased it rather differently. If you take the initial letters of the suggested title, you’ll get the drift . . . But Steve had an important point: he felt that books on object-oriented programming (OOP) frequently assumed too much prior knowledge or weren’t easily adaptable to PHP in a practical way.
