  • This report originated in 1999 as a result of discussions between the Committee on Solar and Space Physics (CSSP) and officials within NASA’s Office of Space Science Sun- Earth Connections program. As noted in the statement of task (Appendix A), the objective of the study was to provide a scientific assessment and strategy for the study of magnetized plasmas in the solar system. By emphasizing the connections between locally occurring (solar system) structures and processes and their astrophysical counterparts, the study would contribute to a unified view of cosmic plasma behavior.

  • The questions posed in the task for this study are part of a very broad and important set of issues for the Department of Defense. To answer them required the Committee on Critical Technology Accessibility to develop its own perspective about the context within which the questions could be placed. As a result, this report provides judgments and recommendations about both the specific questions and the broader context. I wish to express my appreciation to the members of the committee for their contributions to the preparation of this report.

  • The committee was tasked to determine the best instrumentation and procedures for measuring BFD (see Box S-1). To do this, it reviewed technical specifications, viewed demonstrations of the operation and use of current and prospective systems, and evaluated factors such as human handling variability, process transparency, and software variability judgment. The committee found that given the current clay variation, a measurement precision (standard deviation) of 0.5 mm is sufficient; instruments featuring greater precision add little practical value to the testing process.

First, it represents the first jointly authorized publication by both American Association of Medical Physicists (AAPM) and American College of Medical Physics (ACMP). This document began as a 1991 ACMP report. In 1997 the General Medical Physics committee of AAPM invited Dr. Brahmavar, who authored the original report, to chair a task group to rewrite and update the document as an AAPM task group report. As it neared completion, there was a suggestion that perhaps ACMP would be interested in supporting the revised document.
