  • The Laboratory Gas Burner Tirrill or Bunsen burners provide a ready source of heat in the chemistry laboratory. In general, since chemical reactions proceed faster at elevated temperatures, the use of heat enables the experimenter to accomplish many experiments more quickly than would be possible at room temperature. The burner illustrated in Fig. 1.1 is typical of the burners used in most general chemistry laboratories. Figure 1.1 The Bunsen burner. • . 1.

  • This book is the result of close cooperation between industry and academia, notably Ericsson and two universities in Sweden: Chalmers University of Technology (CTH) in Göteborg and The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm. In 1987, a student at CTH presented her PhD thesis on the topic of conformal antennas. It was then considered an interesting but difficult technology with no immediate application.

  • Stereopsis Stereoacuity is determined by presenting targets with retinal disparity separately to each eye using polarized images. The most popular office tests measure a range of thresholds from 800–40 seconds of arc. Normal stereoacuity is 40 seconds of arc. If a patient achieves this level of stereoacuity, one is assured that the eyes are aligned orthotropically and that vision is intact in each eye. Random dot stereograms have no monocular depth cues and provide an excellent screening test for strabismus and amblyopia in children.

  • The heart, located in the mediastinum, is the central structure of the cardiovascular system. It is protected by the bony structures of the sternum anteriorly, the spinal column posteriorly, and the rib cage. Clinical Tip:The cone-shaped heart has its tip (apex) just above the diaphragm to the left of the midline. This is why we may think of the heart as being on the left side, since the strongest beat can be heard or felt here.

  • The cone snail is the only invertebrate system in which the vitamin K-dependent carboxylase (orc-carboxylase) and its product c-carboxygluta-mic acid (Gla) have been identified. It remains the sole source of structural information of invertebrate c-carboxylase substrates. Four novel Gla-con-taining peptides were purified from the venom of Conus textileand charac-terized using biochemical methods and mass spectrometry.

  • The cones function under daylight (photopic) conditions. The cone system is specialized for color perception and high spatial resolution. The majority of cones are located within the macula, the portion of the retina serving the central 10° of vision. In the middle of the macula a small pit termed the fovea, packed exclusively with cones, provides best visual acuity. Photoreceptors hyperpolarize in response to light, activating bipolar, amacrine, and horizontal cells in the inner nuclear layer. ...

  • In this p;,perI [ discuss the formal relationship between the process of focussing and interpret;ition of pronominal anaphora. The discussion of focussing extends the work of Grosz [1977]. Foct, ssing is defined algorithmical]y as a process which chooses a focus of attention in a discourse and moves it around as the speaker's focus ch'mges. The paper shows how to use the focussing algorithm by ;m extended example given below. DI-I Alfred a,ld Zohar liked to play baseball. 2 They played it everyday after school before dinner. 3 After their game, the two usually went for ice cream cones. ...

  • Abstract Critical to brain development is the proper growth and maturation of the axons underlying neuronal circuitry and communication throughout the nervous system. During development, the axon undergoes a remarkable process of outgrowth from the cell body, elongation, pathfinding to its target, differentiation of its synaptic junction, and establishment of connections with dendritic and/or somatic synapses. In the human brain, the most dramatic period of axonal development is midgestation to the end of the second year of life (i.e.

  • Nanomaterials, which are materials with structural units on a nanometer scale in at least one direction, is the fastest growing area in materials science and engineering. Material properties become different on the nanoscale: for example, the theoretical strength of materials can be reached or quantum effects may appear. One-dimensional and quasi-one-dimensional materials such as nanotubes and nanowires demonstrate many extreme properties that can be tuned by controlling their structure and diameter.

  • We study the Radon transform Rf of functions on Stiefel and Grassmann manifolds. We establish a connection between Rf and G˚ arding-Gindikin fractional integrals associated to the cone of positive definite matrices. By using this connection, we obtain Abel-type representations and explicit inversion formulae for Rf and the corresponding dual Radon transform. We work with the space of continuous functions and also with Lp spaces.
