  • This book now has far too long a history for my liking. It is frightening to think that it was first published now nearly a quarter of a century ago. It has been in continuous print ever since and many people have been kind enough to say how it has helped them with their studies, research or just developing their design process. Needless to say there are many others who have been rather more critical of some of the ideas and most of their arguments have been taken into account as the book has progressed through previous editions to this fourth one....

  • Basic design decisions can have a considerable effect on the overall buildability and cost of a building. The right choices can help to reduce conflict in the design and construction process, and to reduce the likelihood of expensive remedial work. Focusing on modern commercial and industrial buildings, this publication provides advice to help the designer make the right choices. Before commencing a design, it is essential that due attention is paid to planning. The first part of the publication therefore deals with planning and management issues. ...

  • Starting from the assumption that machine translation (MT) should be based on theoretically s o u n d grounds, we argue that, given the state of the a r t , the only v i a b l e solution for the designer of software tools for MT, is to provide the linguists building the MT system with a generator of highly specialized, problem oriented systems. We propose that such theory sensitive systems be generated automatically by supplying a set of definitions to a kernel software, of which we give an informal description in the paper. We give...

  • A considerable body of accumulated knowledge about the design of languages for communicating information to computers has been derived from the subfields of programming language design and semantics. It has been the goal of the P A r R group at SRI to utilize a relevant portion of this knowledge in implementing tools to facilitate communication of linguistic information to computers. The PATR-II formalism is our current computer language for encoding linguistic information.

  • The design/check of steel frames is seamlessly integrated within the program. Initiation of the design process, along with control of various design parame-ters, is accomplished using the Design menu. Automated design at the object level is available for any one of a number of user-selected design codes, as long as the structures have first been modeled and analyzed by the program.

  • Generally, a process is defined as a sequence of events that transforms the biological materials of food products, via biochemical changes, into stable forms with added value. This can create new products or modify existing ones. Process design refers to the design of food processes and manufacturing methods, while plant design refers to the design of the whole processing plant. The processing of food is no longer as simple or straightforward as in the past. Food process design is an interdisciplinary science that is highly regarded by the food industry.

  • Throughout all the editions of How to Cheat in Photoshop – a book which will, incidentally, teach you how to use Photoshop – I’ve maintained a website and reader forum to help readers with their photomontage-related problems. This has included a regular weekly contest, the Friday Challenge. And I’ve noticed that one of the major issues facing Photoshop artists is not how to use the Curves dialog, or the Pen tool, or how to save work for the web. One of the major stumbling blocks, it turns out, is the design process....

  • Concrete has been in use as a primary building material since Roman times. As it is strong in compression but weak in tension, it was used in arches, vaults and walls where it is stressed principally in compression. In the mid-nineteenth century, it was discovered that iron and later steel bars could be embedded in the concrete, effectively giving it tensile strength. This allowed it to be used in beams and slabs, where it worked in bending. Buildings, bridges, retaining walls and many other structures were made in this reinforced concrete.

  • ‘Design’ is one of those words that means all things to all people. Every manufactured thing, from the most lyrical of ladies’ hats to the greasiest of gearboxes, qualifies, in some sense or other, as a design. It can mean yet more. Nature, to some is Divine Design; to others it is design by Natural Selection, the ultimate genetic algorithm. The reader will agree that it is necessary to narrow the field, at least a little. This book is about

  • This book is about the digital logic design of microprocessors. It is intended to provide both an understanding of the basic principles of digital logic design, and how these fundamental principles are applied in the building of complex microprocessor circuits using current technologies. Although the basic principles of digital logic design have not changed, the design process, and the implementation of the circuits have changed.

  • Dialogues may be seen as comprising commonplace routines on the one hand and specialized, task-specific interactions on the other. Object-orientation is an established means of separating the generic from the specialized. The system under discussion combines this objectoriented approach with a self-organizing, mixed-initiative dialogue strategy, raising the possibility of dialogue systems that can be assembled from ready-made components and tailored, specialized components.

  • I intentionally left out the whole world of hydraulics. While hydraulic power can be the answer when very compact actuators or high power density motors are required, it is potentially more danger- ous, and definitely messier, to work with than electrically powered devices. It is also much less efficient—a real problem for battery pow- ered robots. There are many texts on hydraulic power and its uses. If hydraulics is being considered in a design, the reader is referred to Industrial Fluid Power (4 volumes) 3rd ed., published by Womack Education Publications.

  • The paper presents some of the results obtained within a research project aimed at developing ET (English Tutor), an intelligent tutoring system which supports Italian students in learning the English verbs. We concentrate on one of the most important modules of the system, the domain (i.e. verb) expert which is devoted to generate, in a cognitively transparent way, the right tense for the verb(s) appearing in the exercises presented to the student. An example which highlights the main capabilities of the verb expert is provided. A prototype version of ET has been fully implemented. ...
