  • There are notes of course of lectures on Field theory aimed at providing the beginner with an introduction to algebraic extensions, algebraic function fields, formally real fields and valuated fields. These lectures were preceded by an elementary course on group theory, vector spaces and ideal theory of rings—especially of Noetherian rings. A knowledge of these is presupposed in these notes.

  • There is currently much interest in bringing together the tradition of categorial grammar, and especially the Lambek calculus (Lambek, 1958), with the more recent paradigm of linear logic (Girard, 1987) to which it has strong ties. One active research area concerns the design of non-commutative versions of linear logic (Abrusci, 1991; Rdtor6, 1993) which can be sensitive to word order while retaining the hypothetical reasoning capabilities of standard (commutative) linear logic that make it so well-adapted to handling such phenomena as quantifier scoping (Dalrymple et al., 1995). ...

  • Surveying a vast theory like Teichmüller theory is like surveying a land, and the various chapters in this Handbook are like a collection of maps forming an atlas: some of them give a very general overview of the field, others give a detailed view of some crowded area, and others are more focussed on interesting details. There are intersections between the chapters, and these intersections are necessary.

  • New members have to buy their books or borrow them from older members of the bank. They should pay an entrance fee and start bringing their weekly mandatory savings to the bank meetings. New members are not eligible for loans until they have attended four bank meetings and saved four times. Because their savings are small, their loans will be small at first and so will their dividends. If the village bank grows to 35 members and still more women want to join, the group should help the new women form their own village bank. Once membership grows...

  • The principle of Occam’s razor loosely translates to “the simplest solution is often the best”. The author of Kinematic Geometry of Surface Machining utilizes this reductionist philosophy to provide a solution to the highly inefficient process of machining sculptured parts on multi-axis NC machines. He has developed a method to quickly calculate the necessary parameters, greatly reduce trial and error, and achieve efficient machining processes by using less input information, and in turn saving a great deal of time.

  • Since the publication of this book, in 1983, several new and exciting developments have taken place in the field of Plant Tissue Culture, and it now forms a major component of what is popularly called Plant Biotechnology. Many of the important crop plants which were then regarded as recalcitrant are now amenable to regeneration from cultured protoplasts, cells, and calli, enabling subjection of these crops to improvement by biotechnological methods of cell manipulation.

  • My intention in starting this book was to write a second edition of an earlier book I wrote, Consolidated Financial Statements: Concepts, Issues and Techniques (Paul Chapman Publishing, 1987). It soon became apparent that the area had changed so radically in the last eight years that a complete rewrite was necessary, and hence this new book has been born (or rather quarried!).

  • CLASSICAL GEOMETRY — LECTURE NOTES DANNY CALEGARI 1. A CRASH COURSE IN GROUP THEORY A group is an algebraic object which formalizes the mathematical notion which expresses the intuitive idea of symmetry. We start with an abstract definition. Definition 1.1. A group is a set G and an operation m : G × G → G called multiplication with the following properties: (1) m is associative. That is, for any a, b, c ∈ G, m(a, m(b, c)) = m(m(a, b), c) and the product can be written unambiguously as abc. (2) There is a unique element e ∈ G called the...

  • Articles in this volume are based on talks given at the Gauss-Dirichlet Conference held on June 20-24, 2005. The conference commemorated the 150th anniversary of the death of C.-F. Gauss and the 200th anniversary of the birth of J.-L. Dirichlet. The volume begins with a definitive summary of the life and work of Dirichlet and continues with thirteen papers by leading experts on research topics of current interest in number theory that were directly influenced by Gauss and Dirichlet.

  • SQL is full of difficulties and traps for the unwary. You can avoid them if you understand relational theory, but only if you know how to put the theory into practice. In this insightful book, author C.J. Date explains relational theory in depth, and demonstrates through numerous examples and exercises how you can apply it directly to your use of SQL. This second edition includes new material on recursive queries, “missing information” without nulls, new update operators, and topics such as aggregate operators, grouping and ungrouping, and view updating.
