  • Concept of hybrid molecules: When double strand DNA is steamed to a temperature exceed the melting temperature (Tm), it will separate into 2 single strands DNA due to breaks of H bonds. If the reaction temperature is then decreased slowly plus other appropriate experimental conditions, these ssDNA will pair again. This phenomenon is called the hybridization of molecules. Characteristic of the hybrid molecules: Specificity, the re-pairing occurs only between two complementary sequences.

  • While the term chemical substance is a precise technical term that is synonymous with "chemical" for professional chemists, the meaning of the word chemical varies for non-chemists within the English speaking world or those using English. For industries, government and society in general in some countries,[10] the word chemical includes a wider class of substances that contain many mixtures of such chemical substances, often finding application in many vocations.

  • I hope the reader will find inspiration from the new concepts described in this work. What is presented is a new approach to the metallurgy of castings. Not everything in the book can claim to be proved at this stage. Ultimately, science proves itself by underpinning good technology. Thus, not only must it be credible but, in addition, it must really work. Perhaps we may never be able to say for certain that it is really true, but in the meantime it is proposed as a piece of knowledge as reliable as can now be assembled (Ziman 2001)....

  • Simple machines, such as the club and oar (examples of the lever), are prehistoric. More complex engines using human power, animal power, water power, wind power and even steam power date back to antiquity. Human power was focused by the use of simple engines, such as the capstan, windlass or treadmill, and with ropes, pulleys, and block and tackle arrangements; this power was transmitted usually with the forces multiplied and the speed reduced. These were used in cranes and aboard ships in Ancient Greece, as well as in mines, water pumps and siege engines in Ancient Rome. The writers of...

  • The design principles favoured in Europe, because of economic and other restraints such as smaller and twistier roads, leant toward smaller cars and corresponding to the design principles that concentrated on increasing the combustion efficiency of smaller engines. This produced more economical engines with earlier four-cylinder designs rated at 40 horsepower (30 kW) and six-cylinder designs rated as low as 80 horsepower (60 kW), compared with the large volume V-8 American engines with power ratings in the range from 250 to 350 hp, some even over 400hp. (190 to 260 kW)...

  • The metastable state of liquids which are supercooled has been the subject of interest for over 300 years. Supercooled water and aqueous solutions are found in the atmosphere, in cold-hardy organisms, and in many industrial applications. For example, freeze tolerance and the associated avoidance of supercooling, is the dominant cold-related strategy in Southern Hemisphere insects, being found in 77% of cold hardy insects. In industry, thermodynamic systems such as cool boxes have a significant financial driving force for supercooling to be controlled and this is also covered in this book....

  • This text is unlike most traditional legal works and was prepared this way intentionally. Our teaching experience and feedback from students and educators alike gave us the strong sense that there was a need for something other than a traditional casebook approach to learning “con law.” While there is certainly a place for traditional texts, people with whom we consulted wanted a text that fell between basic civics books and law school-level casebooks to use in their introductory undergraduate courses on constitutional law or search and seizure.
