  • Medicine is, fortunately, constantly evolving. Imaging diagnosis is no exception. Technical improvements guarantee further developments in diagnosis. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have attained a recognized value in the diagnosis of the heart, which is continuing to increase. For this reason, we have now provided a separate chapter on diagnostic imaging of the heart. We have placed sectional CT images next to MR images of the heart to facilitate classification. We have limited ourselves to scans which are presently recognized as standard.

  • Although magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, has been with us for quite some time and is in widespread and routine use, good “recipe books” on the performance of specific actual studies are hard to find. Since all imaging modalities, and particularly MRI, are carried out by a range of operators under varying clinical circumstances, standardizing the work flow becomes ever more important, because it is only through standardization that the quality of diagnostic imaging will improve. This pared-down book attempts to close the gaps in MRI protocols for routine applications.

  • Spinal Muscles The spinal muscles are a complicated group of muscles that pass along the back of the animal from the pelvis to the middle of the neck. Each muscle consists of numerous overlapping bundles that continuously originate and insert along the spine. They lie on either side of the upper surface of the vertebral column, separated by the upright spines. This powerful muscle group consists of four units: the longissimus, the iliocostalis, the spinalis & semispinalis, and the multifidus, all of which may be divided into regional components (cervicis, thoracis & lumborum).

  • Gluteus superficialis HORSE • Origin: Point of the hip (coxal tuberosity) and an adjacent area on the outer edge of the ilium of the pelvis; from fascia covering the gluteus medius (in part ultimately originating from the ligament connecting the sacrum to the ilium). • Insertion: Third trochanter of the femur, one third of the way down the outside of the bone. • Action: Flexes the hip joint; pulls the limb away from the body. • Structure: The gluteus superficialis is a thin, V-shaped muscle that converges on the femur. The front portion is partly covered by, and firmly...

  • In some patients ankylosing spondylitis is restricted exclusively to an affection of the sacro- iliac articulation (sacroiliitis), best shown by MRI, as it causes bone marrow edema and cartilage changes. X-ray takes a long time to reveal this arthritis, because there only bone destruction and ankylosis are visible, these are not seen in the early stages of the disease. In the end sacroiliitis can lead to total destruction and ankylosis of the sacroiliacal joint, then of course it is clearly visible in x-ray (Figure 3).

  • When I was asked to write this book, my first thought was how was I going to improve on what was already out there? There are literally dozens of enormous volumes covering the everexpanding field of MRI. This rather more concise effort attempts to pull together lots of vital information and condense it down into a simple-to-follow guide. It will be useful for trainees and experienced professionals alike.

  • There are various types of models in the environmental sciences, and surely there is no unique opinion about the essence of an environmental model. Differences may mainly concern the scope of the models and the modeling methods. Concerning the scope, this book is relatively open; i.e. examples from different branches of environmental science and technology are included, mainly from the hydrosphere and the geosphere, and also from the biosphere and the atmosphere.

  • Fluid is anechoic (black) on ultrasound. In the case of small amounts of hemoperitoneum, fluid may be visible only as an anechoic stripe separating the liver and the kidney on the right, or the spleen and the kidney on the left. Fluid may also accumulate between the spleen and diaphragm. Free fluid pooled in the pelvis is visible as anechoic collections lateral to the bladder on a transverse view. Free fluid may also be visible in the recto uterine recess (pouch of Douglas) in females using a sagittal view. In cases of gross hemoperitoneum, loops of bowel may be...

  • Radiation therapy is rarely used in the initial treatment of ovarian cancer, but it may be used to relieve pain and other problems caused by the disease. The treatment is given at a hospital or clinic. Each treatment takes only a few minutes. Side effects depend mainly on the amount of radiation given and the part of your body that is treated. Radiation therapy to your abdomen and pelvis may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or bloody stools. Also, your skin in the treated area may become red, dry, and tender.
