  • I expected a lot, but you surprised me with even more. Having used CVS for years I hesitated to try Subversion until now, although I knew it would solve many of the shortcomings of CVS. After reading your book, my excuses to stay with CVS disappeared. Oh, and coming from the Pragmatic Bookshelf this book is fun to read too. Thanks Mike. Steffen Gemkow Managing Director, ObjectFab GmbH I’m a long-time user of CVS and I’ve been skeptical of Subversion, wondering if it would ever be “ready for prime time.” Until now. • Model-theoretic pragmatics is an attempt to provide a formal description of the pragmatics of natural language as effects arising from using model-theoretic semantics in a dynamic environment. The pragmatic phenomena considered here have been variously labeled ~resupposition [I] and eonven¢ional implicature [6]. The models used in traditional model-theoretic semantics provide a complete and static representation of knowledge about the world, llowever, this is not the environment in which language is used. ...

  • An utterance may be syntactically and semantIcally well-formed yet violate the pragmatic rules of the world model. This paper presents a context-based strateEy for constructing a cooperative but limited response to pragmatlcally illformed queries. Sug~estlon heuristics use a context model of the speaker's task inferred from the preceding dialogue to propose revisions to the speaker's ill-formed query. Selection heuristics then evaluate these suggestions based upon semantic and relevance criteria. ...

  • In this paper we examine the pragmatic knowledge an utterance-planning system must have in order to produce certain kinds of definite and indefinite noun phrases. An utterance.planning system, like other planning systems, plans actions to satisfy an agent's goals, but allows some of the actions to consist of the utterance of sentences. This approach to language generation emphasizes the view of language as action, and hence assigns a critical role to pragmatics.

  • Curiosity is in his title.John Grotzinger, NASA’s Curiosity project manager, has a pretty cool job. He gets to direct the research efforts of NASA's Curiosity rover. He and his team have already demonstrated evidence of liquid water on ancient Mars, and they are now in hot pursuit of measurable methane[U1] on the planet. Even if Grotzinger’s team find methane—and convincingly confirm that finding—it still won’t be unequivocal evidence of microbial life. But it will be tantalizing enough that their next step will be to focus on tracking down the source.
