  • Temporal trends in unsafe abortion have been inconsistent internationally (figure 2). Between 1995 and 2000, a decline of 5 or more percentage points took place in the unsafe abortion rate in eastern, middle, and western Africa, the Caribbean, and Central America. Other developing areas had no appreciable change in the rate of unsafe abortion. 6 Unsafe abortions vary substantially by age across regions: adolescents (15–19 years) account for 25% of all unsafe abortions in Africa, whereas the percentage in Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean is much lower (figure 3).

  • A procedure was designed to assess individual exposure to NO2 as a marker of outdoor air pollution considering both spatial and temporal variations on exposure. Ambi- ent NO2 concentrations for 93 sampling points covering the study area were obtained using radial symmetry pas- sive samplers (Radiello®, Fondazione Salvatore Maugeri, Padua/Italy) which remained exposed for four sampling periods of 7 days each. The campaigns took place in April, June, and November 2004 and February 2005.

  • Livestock was reared mostly in rural areas while milk and milk products were consumed both in rural and urban areas. Because the marketable surplus of milk available with individual farmers was too small to justify a trip to the nearest town, it was sold to middlemen who often exploited the farmers by charging an amount in excess of the cost of their services, reducing farmers’ returns on the one hand and charging higher prices to the consumers on the other. The Plan document noted that some milk production also took place in ‘congested and insanitary pockets by gujar...

  • Tungsten oxide film was deposited on ITO-coated glass by using RF magnetron sputtering method from WO3 ceramic target. Thin film preparation – process took place in Ar + O2 plasma. The dependence of tungsten oxide film structure on experiment conditions was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) Raman spectroscopy. In this paper, we considered that the thickness of ITO layers about 150nm to 350nm clearly effects on the Raman and XRD spectrograms of WO3 films.

  • This book emerged from a series of workshops the Technical Secretariat of the European Network of Health Promoting Schools (ENHPS) initiated on practice and evaluation of the health-promoting schools approach. Five workshops took place from 1998 to 2006. The fourth workshop in November 2005 encouraged 40 participants from 33 countries to plan and carry out a case study in their country over a period of five months. The focus was developing and using indicators for health-promoting schools, and their work had to be relevant to the needs of the country.

  • The savings banks in Europe were entities that were established in order to capture savings. This set them apart from the credit cooperatives and other mutual banks which aimed to provide better access to credit for their associates. 3 The savings banks, because they were non-profit entities, financed their capital via donations and adopted this institutional set up precisely in order to protect their ‘commercial’ clients, that is, their depositors. This occurred simply because the donations only took place at the outset of the savings banks’ activity.

  • "That finishes everything," exclaimed Jeanne Vance, placing a neatly folded handkerchief in a basket. "And oh, girls, what a little bit of a pile it makes!" The five girls drew their chairs closer to the basket and gazed ruefully at its contents. "How many handkerchiefs are there, Jeanne?" asked one. "There are fifty handkerchiefs and five pairs of socks. It seemed like a great many when we took them to make, but what do they amount to after all?"

  • The Mandate by CEPT and the First Action Plan of 1982 The mandate given to the Technical Committee GSM by CEPT in mid-1982 requested the ‘‘harmonisation of a public mobile communication system in the 900 MHz band’’. 2 This decision took place during the very hot promotion phase for ISDN. Therefore it is remarkable to note that GSM was not defined as a ‘‘mobile ISDN’’. Instead the decision leaves the nature of the GSM open, but requests the study of the interconnection with ISDN. ...

  • This original study by Claudia Kissling of the University of Bremen fits our series on non-state actors for two reasons. First, she demonstrates the working of the international policy cycle following from the framing and passing of an international treaty. In this case the implementation and monitoring facets of an international agreement are discussed by a close analysis of the 7th Review Conference of the parties to the 1968 Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), which took place at the United Nations in 2005.

  • Most methods for data analysis were derived from the plasma radioactivity curve and were based on the general assumptions that synthesis and catabolism took place in a compartment in close contact with the intravascular space, that the study subjects were in steady state concerning IgG metabolism, and that metabolism of the labeled protein was identical with that of the native unlabeled protein (1). Figure 2a shows a semilogarithmic plot of the time-dependent decline of 125I-labeled IgG representing the disappearance of the tracer from the plasma in a normal subject.

  • Our study of credit experience is necessarily based on cer- tain arbitrary assumptions. In the first place we have assumed that all loans can be divided into two mutually exclusive classes, one consisting of good loans with which the bank had no special collection difficulty, and one of bad loans which gave rise to one or more of the following collection prob- lems: the bank collected from a comaker; the bank took legal action; the loan was excessively delinquent;2 the bank charged off the loan.

  • While the Broadbent and Daly study may provide useful insights on the potential for fiscal adjustments to boost growth, its relevance to the current situation in the United States is questionable. The vast majority of instances of fiscal adjustment took place during periods when economies were near or above potential GDP. In only 6 of the 29 fiscal adjustments that were tax- driven was the gap between potential and actual GDP even as large as one percentage point.
