  • Proteinase inhibitors (PIs) are widely distributed in plants, microorganisms and mammalian species; they are known to play pivotal roles in regulating proteinase activities in these species. Accordingly, PIs are important molecular tools for many research disciplines. Studies of the correlation of PI structures and functions have lead to understanding of their inhibitory actions against physiological important proteases. There are potential therapeutic applications for such studies for diseases relating to excessive activities of proteases.

  • Export and Import Utilities The Export utility provides a simple way for you to transfer data objects between Oracle databases, even if they reside on platforms with different hardware and software configurations. When you run Export against an Oracle database, objects (such as tables) are extracted, followed by their related objects (such as indexes, comments, and grants), if any. The extracted data is written to an Export file, which is an Oracle binary-format dump file that is typically located on disk or tape.

  • We describe a generic framework for integrating various stochastic models of discourse coherence in a manner that takes advantage of their individual strengths. An integral part of this framework are algorithms for searching and training these stochastic coherence models. We evaluate the performance of our models and algorithms and show empirically that utilitytrained log-linear coherence models outperform each of the individual coherence models considered.

  • Lexical-semantic resources are used extensively for applied semantic inference, yet a clear quantitative picture of their current utility and limitations is largely missing. We propose system- and application-independent evaluation and analysis methodologies for resources’ performance, and systematically apply them to seven prominent resources. Our findings identify the currently limited recall of available resources, and indicate the potential to improve performance by examining non-standard relation types and by distilling the output of distributional methods. ...

  • Network management is the poor cousin of network design and implementation. All too often it is treated as an inconvenience by equipment manufacturers, or forgotten entirely. But the ability to manage network devices is fundamental to their utility, and a successful and functional network can only be built from equipment that can be easily managed and operated. Management refers to the ability to confi gure, control, operate, and diagnose equipment. Of course, no vendor ships devices that cannot be managed, but typically each is operated and controlled in a different way.

  • Asset prices are determined by investors’ risk preferences and by the distributions of assets’ risky future payments. Economists refer to these two bases of prices as investor "tastes" and the economy’s "technologies" for generating asset returns. A satisfactory theory of asset valuation must consider how individuals allocate their wealth among assets having different future payments. This chapter explores the development of expected utility theory, the standard approach for modeling investor choices over risky assets....

  • Images are central to the task of exploring for and producing oil and gas (hydrocarbons) from the Earth’s subsurface. To understand their utility, one must look at both how hydrocarbons are formed and how we explore for them. Oil and gas (hydrocarbons) are generally found in the pores of sedimentary rocks, such as sandstone or limestone. These rocks are formed by the burial of sediment over millions of years and its subsequent chemical alteration (diagenesis).

  • With the introduction of multicore devices such as the iPad 2 and the quad-core Mac- Book Pro, writing multithreaded apps that take advantage of multiple cores on a device has become one of the biggest headaches for developers. Take, for instance, the introduction of iPad 2. On the launch day, only a few applications, basically those released by Apple, were able to take advantage of its multiple cores. Applications like Safari performed very well on the iPad 2 compared to the original iPad, but some third-party browsers did not perform as well as Safari.

  • How different levels of genetic variance affect the rate of evolutionary change within populations has also been intensively studied. Such changes were originally studied using phenotypic markers: variation among individual plants in traits, such as leaf shape or flower color (Ward et al., 2008). Subsequently the detection of genetic variation has become more sensitive, firstly through the utilization of variation in enzymes (allozymes) and then through PCR-based marker systems allowing direct examination of DNA sequence variation.
