  • The inner magnetosphere is an important region of space plasma because it is one of the “kitchens” for space weather effects. The scientific understanding of this region is important for predicting the interaction between space environmental conditions and human activities. The inner magnetospheric plasma is a unique composition of different plasma particles and waves. It covers a huge plasma energy range with spatial and time variations of many orders of magnitude.

  • Since the early Sixties and Seventies it has been known that the regular and context-free languages are characterized by definability in the monadic second-order theory of certain structures. More recently, these descriptive characterizations have been used to obtain complexity results for constraint- and principle-based theories of syntax and to provide a uniform model-theoretic framework for exploring the relationship between theories expressed in disparate formal terms.

  • This paper provides a model theoretic semantics to feature terms augmented with set descriptions. We provide constraints to specify HPSG style set descriptions, fixed cardinality set descriptions, set-membership constraints, restricted universal role quantifications, set union, intersection, subset and disjointness. A sound, complete and terminating consistency checking procedure is provided to determine the consistency of any given term in the logic. It is shown that determining consistency of terms is a NP-complete problem. ...

  • Model-theoretic pragmatics is an attempt to provide a formal description of the pragmatics of natural language as effects arising from using model-theoretic semantics in a dynamic environment. The pragmatic phenomena considered here have been variously labeled ~resupposition [I] and eonven¢ional implicature [6]. The models used in traditional model-theoretic semantics provide a complete and static representation of knowledge about the world, llowever, this is not the environment in which language is used. ...

  • According to the theoretical and practical base on development of algorithmic thinking for learners, if during the course of descriptive geometry, trainers equip students the basic algorithm and create opportunities for them to propose algorithm as well as improve gradually the level of algorithmic application, students shall have better learning outcomes and develop their algorithmic thinking.

  • Science progresses by a symbiotic interaction between theory and experiment: theory is used to interpret experimental results and may suggest new experiments; experiment helps to test theoretical predictions and may lead to improved theories. Theoretical Chemistry (including Physical Chemistry and Chemical Physics) provides the concep- tual and technical background and apparatus for the rationalisation of phenomena in the chemical sciences. It is, therefore, a wide ranging subject, reflecting the diversity of molecular and related species and processes arising in chemical systems.

  • Room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) are an interesting and valuable family of compounds. Although they are all salts, their components can vary considerably, including imidazolium, pyridinium, ammonium, phosphonium, thiazolium, and triazolium cations. In general, these cations have been combined with weakly coordinating anions. Common examples include tetrafluoroborate, hexafluorophosphate, triflate, triflimide, and dicyanimide.

  • Theoretical analysis and computational modeling are important tools for characterizing what nervous systems do, determining how they function, and understanding why they operate in particular ways. Neuroscience encompasses approaches ranging from molecular and cellular studies to human psychophysics and psychology. Theoretical neuroscience encourages cross-talk among these sub-disciplines by constructing compact representations of what has been learned, building bridges between different levels of description, and identifying unifying concepts and principles.

  • Although much of its discovery process is descriptive and qualitative, chemistry is fundamentally a quantitative science. It serves a wide range of human needs, activities, and concerns. The mathematical sciences provide the language for quantitative science, and this language is growing in many directions as computational science in general continues its rapid expansion. A timely opportunity now exists to strengthen and increase the beneficial impacts of chemistry by enhancing the interaction between chemistry and the mathematical sciences.

  • Advances in the diagnosis, prevention, treatment and cure of neurological diseases are based upon scientific discovery. The journey from discovery to treatment is often arduous and involves both basic and clinical science. Over the ages, multiple intertwined paths of discovery connect the recognition of distinct diseases of the nervous system to exquisite diagnostic descriptions, which, when coupled with the scientific understanding of the disease, have allowed the development of effective treatments and interventions...

  • This monograph is an “offspring” of an earlier textbook on Environmental Economics which was published in 2002. It is, however, not just an update or a simple translation of the former German version. Rather, this book includes topics, which played no significant role in public opinion some 10 years ago. Climate change is one of the cross-border environmental issues which has substantially gained importance and public attention over the last decade.

  • In this Chapter we focus on the field-theoretical description of the inflationary phase of the early universe and its post-inflationary dynamics (reheating and particle production) in the context of supergravity, based on the original papers (1–10). To begin with, let us first introduce some basics of inflation.

  • This is the third edition of a physical chemistry textbook designed for a two-semester undergraduate physical chemistry course. The physical chemistry course is often the first opportunity that a student has to synthesize descriptive, theoretical, and mathe- matical knowledge about chemistry into a coherent whole. To facilitate this synthe- sis, the book is constructed about the idea of defining a system, studying the states in which it might be found, and analyzing the processes by which it can change its state....
