A dramatic increase in knowledge regarding the molecular biology of brain tumors has been established over the past few years, and this has lead to the development of novel therapeutic strategies for these patients. In this book a review of the options available for the clinical management of patients with these tumors are outlined. In addition advances in radiology both for pre-operative diagnostic purposes along with surgical planning are described.
Radiotherapy, also referred to as radiation therapy, radiation oncology or
therapeutic radiology, is one of the three principal modalities used in the
treatment of malignant disease (cancer), the other two being surgery and
Endometriosis is a progressive debilitating disease affecting the physical, social and
psychological aspects of normal life quality in nearly 1 of 7 women of reproductive
age. Endometriosis is considered to be an enigmatic disease owing to the lack of
specific set of symptoms, poorly understood pathogenesis, complexity in diagnosis
and limited therapeutic options available for management of the disorder. The last
three decades we have witnessed a significant volume of research related to
Isolated blunt abdominal trauma (BAT) represents about 5% of annual trauma mortality
from blunt trauma. As part of multiple-site injury (polytrauma), BAT contributes another
15% of trauma mortality. In the abdominal trauma, the best exploration strategy is one that
leads most quickly and reliably in the diagnosis of surgical injury. This strategy must be
established based on hemodynamic status and clinical guidance but should never delay a
Veterinary medicine is advancing at a very rapid pace, particularly given the breadth
of the discipline. This book examines new developments covering a wide range of
issues from health and welfare in livestock, pets, and wild animals to public health
supervision and biomedical research.
As well as containing reviews offering fresh insight into specific issues, this book
includes a selection of scientific articles which help to chart the advance of this science.
The book is divided into several sections.
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among men and women in
the United States with 170,000 deaths per year. This exceeds the sum of the
next three leading causes of death due to cancer: breast, colon, and prostate.
There are over 1 million deaths worldwide due to lung cancer, making it truly
an epidemic. Fewer than 15% achieve a 5-yr survival. The vast majority (85%)
present with advanced disease, although stage I patients may have a 5-yr
survival approaching 70% (1).
In this review, will be summarize the principle of these new methodologies and the impact
of omics-techniques, mainly genomic-transcriptomics (analysis of single nucleotide
polymorphisms or gene-expression) and proteomic (identification and quantification of
proteins), in the knowledge of different aspects of allergy diseases (diagnosis, screening,
monitoring of treatment, protective or risk biomarkers and drug development) and the
advance to define the personalized and molecular medicine in this complex kind of diseases....
Central to the development of glomerular inflammation and injury are alterations and
abnormalities of various cytokines and signaling systems. There are four chapters in
this book that deal with these aspects in the pathogenesis. The role of TGF-β in
progressive glomerular disease is discussed in great detail in a chapter well written by
Hyun Soon Lee, with particular reference to mesangial matrix accumulation, while the
role of STAT3 activation in glomerulonephritis is elaborated in the well written
chapter by Fumio Tsuji et al.
Highlights in Skincancer is a companion handbook published expressly for all the practitionners who are interested in skin cancers: medical oncologists and dermatologists but also residents, general practitionners, surgeons, plastic surgeons. The book is designed to teach new aspects of skincancers in the context of practical clinical settings. Each topic is an expert view of a specific skincancer field.
These criteria are
classified into its safety profile, performance within the GI tract and technological
aspects of its development. The criteria are further dependent on the specific purpose
of the strain and on the location for the expression of the specific property. With
regards to safety, the probiotic strain must be of human origin, isolated from the
gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of healthy individuals.
The use of non-biomedical therapeutics and the management of cancer are
high profile issues in health internationally. They both generate, in their
own right, considerable debate amongst academics, practitioners and the
wider public. Increasingly, as non-biomedical approaches have become
more and more a feature of the range of therapeutic options available to
cancer patients, the two have become inextricably linked. This book is concerned
with that increasingly evident combination.
Nursing in Today’s World: Trends, Issues, and Management, 10th edition focuses on
the nonclinical aspects of the professional nursing role. Much of this content is just as critical
to practicing safely as is competence in the performance of clinical skills. As nursing steps up
to play a major role in the changes brought about by healthcare reform, knowledge of the profession
and its place in the healthcare environment has never been more important.
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) used to be regarded as a rare disease.
The increasing numbers of chronic hepatitis C virus carriers in the United
States and subsequent increased incidence of HCC seen in most large
medical centers means that it is no longer an uncommon disease for most
gastroenterologists or oncologists to encounter.
During the times when liver resection or systemic chemotherapy were
the only real therapeutic modalities available, the outcomes were generally
dismal, especially because most patients presented with advanced-stage
Effective new treatments of heart disease are based on a refined understanding of
cellular function and the heart's response to environmental stresses. Not surprisingly
therefore, the field of experimental cardiology has experienced a phase of rapid exponential
growth during the last decade. The acquisition of new knowledge has been so
fast that textbooks of cardiology or textbooks of cardiovascular physiology are often
hard-pressed to keep up with the most important conceptual advances.

Ultrasound nowadays is a well established diagnostic and therapeutic tool in diseases within
several medical specialities. Furthermore, technical improvement of ultrasound equipment
and continuous basic and clinical ultrasound research have increased the use of ultrasound
within new fields.
In gastroenterology, ultrasound has been used for several decades to perform B-mode
imaging of the abdominal organs. However, the development of new techniques, e.g.
In sub-Saharan Africa, as high as 2/3 of tuberculosis patients are HIV/AIDS co-infected and
tuberculosis is the most common cause of death among HIV/AIDS patients worldwide. Tuberculosis and HIV
co-infections are associated with special diagnostic and therapeutic challenges and constitute an immense burden
on healthcare systems of heavily infected countries like Ethiopia. The aim of the study was to determine the
prevalence of pulmonary tuberculosis and their immunologic profiles among HIV positive patients.
Creativity is defined in this report as the production of new ideas that are fit for
a particular business purpose. This sees creativity as the first stage in
innovation. Creativity has a role in enhancing all aspects of business
performance – from the design of new products and services to their production,
marketing and distribution. It is not unusual to link creativity to certain industries
such as film, music or design. But the challenge, as noted by the Chancellor, is
‘not just to encourage creative industries, our priority is to encourage all
industries to be creative’.
Today’s customer-focused, market-driven company cannot afford to miss the fact that many customers prefer environmentally friendly products given a similar cost. Again, it is easy to see that creating and sustaining competitive advantage is still a matter of “better, cheaper, faster.” The Internet has made customers more informed about every aspect of a product, including its potential environmental harms. Companies that can meet these environmental needs will be the winners.
