Today, cancer research is focused on determining how genome and proteome level
information may be useful as tools in prevention, diagnosis, and prognosis. The
development of “omics” technologies, such as proteomics and transcriptomics has
opened new research areas for scientists working on cancer research.

Central to the development of glomerular inflammation and injury are alterations and
abnormalities of various cytokines and signaling systems. There are four chapters in
this book that deal with these aspects in the pathogenesis. The role of TGF-β in
progressive glomerular disease is discussed in great detail in a chapter well written by
Hyun Soon Lee, with particular reference to mesangial matrix accumulation, while the
role of STAT3 activation in glomerulonephritis is elaborated in the well written
chapter by Fumio Tsuji et al.
Plants defend themselves from other organisms by elaborating bioactive chemical
defences. This is the essential basis of the use of herbal medicines that still represents a
major therapeutic resort for much of humanity However, at the outset, it must be stated that
any plant that is not part of our evolved dietary cultures is potentially dangerous.
Commercial herbal medicinal preparations approved by expert regulatory authorities have a
significant place in mainstream conventional medicine and in complementary medicine.
During the last two decades, evidence of increasing trends of several endocrine-related disorders has been strengthened. These disorders often come with lack of uniform diagnosis and/ or even unclear endocrine disruption. The later is mainly due to abnormal classical changes in the blood- released hormone to its targeted organ, abnormal communication between cells within a tissue or organ (paracrine), within the same cell (intracrine) or signals which act on the same cell (autocrine).
Telomeres play an important role in cellular aging and cancer. Human
telomeric DNA and RNA G-rich sequences are capable of forming a four-stranded structure, known as the G-quadruplex. Such a structure might be
important for telomere biology and a good target for drug design.
Inflammation is traditionally viewed as a physiological reaction to tissue
injury. Leukocytes contribute to the inflammatory response by the secretion
of cytotoxic and pro-inflammatory compounds, by phagocytotic activity
and by targeted attack of foreign antigens. Leukocyte accumulation in tis-sues is important for the initial response to injury.
The discovery of RNA interference (RNAi) generated considerable interest
in developing short interfering RNAs (siRNAs) for understanding basic
biology and as the active agents in a new variety of therapeutics. Early
studies showed that selecting an active siRNA was not as straightforward
as simply picking a sequence on the target mRNA and synthesizing the
siRNA complementary to that sequence.
The function of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is dysregu-lated in various types of malignancy as a result of gene amplification,
mutations, or abnormally increased ligand production. Therefore, the tyro-sine kinase activity of the EGFR is a promising therapeutic target.
Diaminopelargonic acid aminotransferase (DAPA AT), which is involved
in biotin biosynthesis, catalyzes the transamination of 8-amino-7-oxonona-noic acid (KAPA) using S-adenosyl-l-methionine (AdoMet) as amino
donor.Mycobacterium tuberculosisDAPA AT, a potential therapeutic tar-get, has been overproduced inEscherichia coliand purified to homogeneity
using a single efficient step on a nickel-affinity column.
