  • A global research community of scientists is teasing out the biochemical mechanisms that regulate normal cellular physiology in a variety of organisms. Much of current research aims to understand the network of molecular reactions that regulate cellular homeostasis, and to learn what allows cells to sense stress and activate appropriate biochemical responses.

  • The global environment that charac- terises the business world highlights the importance of developing strate- gies that go beyond the geographical boundaries of one country. Wage-rate differentials, expanding foreign mar- kets and improved transportation break down barriers of time and space between countries and force the logistics function to take on a global dimension. Global logistics is the response to the increasing integration of international markets as firms try to remain competitive.

  • It has been an honor and a privilege to chair the committee on the state of science in nuclear medicine. As a diagnostic radiologist, a clinicianscientist, and the chairperson of a large academic radiology department, I have been exposed to the many advances in nuclear medicine and have observed their clinical benefits up close. Participating in this review, however, has allowed me to step back and appreciate the magnitude of the progress that has been achieved, and the crucial role that government funding has played in it.

  • Alternative medicine is recognized as medical products and practices that do not belong to the standard cares taken by medical doctors, doctors of osteopathy and allied health professionals. Alternative medicine includes the mind-body interventions (i.e., meditation, yoga, acupuncture, deep-breathing exercises, guided imageryAny of various techniques (such as a series of verbal suggestions) used to guide another person or oneself in imagining sensations— especially in visualizing an image in the mind—to bring about a desired physical response (such as stress reduction).

  • Effective new treatments of heart disease are based on a refined understanding of cellular function and the heart's response to environmental stresses. Not surprisingly therefore, the field of experimental cardiology has experienced a phase of rapid exponential growth during the last decade. The acquisition of new knowledge has been so fast that textbooks of cardiology or textbooks of cardiovascular physiology are often hard-pressed to keep up with the most important conceptual advances.

  • This book describes a course of cancer growth starting from normal cells to cancerous form and the genomic instability, the cancer treatment as well as its prevention in form of the invention of a vaccine. Some diseases are also discussed in detail, such as breast cancer, leucaemia, cervical cancer, and glioma. Understanding cancer through its molecular mechanism is needed to reduce the cancer incidence.

  • There is an urgent need to develop new innovative therapies for the control of advanced cancer. The combination of antigen-specific immunotherapy with the employment of immunomodulatory agents has emerged as a potentially plausible approach for the control of advanced cancer. Methods: In the current study, we explored the combination of the DNA vaccine encoding calreticulin (CRT) linked to human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV-16) E7 antigen (CRT/E7) with the TLR7 agonist imiquimod for their ability to generate E7-specific immune responses and antitumor effects in tumor-bearing mice.

  • The gene encoding the mu-opioid receptor (OPRM1) has been reported to associate with a range of substance dependence and HRH2 is the gene coding histamine H2 receptor, the site of action for various compounds, e.g. amitriptiline and mianserin, used in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. Both OPRM1and HRH2 genes contain some single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), including +118A/G in OPRM1 and +398T/C in HRH2, which were reported to change in protein sequences and result in affecting the therapeutic response. ...

  • The discussion below describes the physical effects of key air pollutants on human health. This discussion is mostly based on Morgan and Jalaludin’s (2001) review. Where possible, sensitive subgroups in the population have been identified, including people with existing disease (mainly respiratory and cardiovascular), people with infections such as influenza and pneumonia, asthmatics, the elderly and children. Exposure-response estimates for the key pollutants are presented in Appendix 3.

  • The questions can only provide meaningful information about the level of financial literacy of individuals and populations if they are sufficiently varied to differentiate between high and low achievers by combining a mixture of easy and more difficult problems. The analysis of responses to each question shows that the spread of difficulty in the core questionnaire is appropriate; differentiating well both within countries and across countries.

  • All Americans have a stake in effective response to hate crimes. These crimes demand priority attention because of their special impact. Bias crimes are designed to intimidate the victim and members of the victim’s community, leaving them feeling isolated, vulnerable, and unprotected by the law. Failure to address this unique type of crime could cause an isolated incident to explode into widespread community tension. The damage done by hate crimes, therefore, cannot be measured solely in terms of physical injury or dollars and cents.

  • Rapid population growth by itself may not always result in environmental degradation. There is case study evidence that some farm households and communities develop technical and institutional innovations in natural resource management in response to increasing pressures on resources. Such responses do not happen in all areas however, and need to be induced and supported through policy measures and other development interventions (for example in the areas of tenure, reorientation of agricultural research and extension, etc.).

  • Human cloning has been one of the most emotive and divisive issues to face UN negotiators and the international community in recent years. This report examines how, that despite a widespread consensus amongst nations that it is desirable to ban reproductive cloning, efforts to negotiate an international convention ground to a halt due to fundamental divisions regarding so-called research or therapeutic cloning. Firm positions on both sides of the debate led to the compromise position of a non-binding UN Declaration on Cloning, (A/RES/59/280).

  • More specifically, we must further examine health beliefs, and food beliefs and practices that have symbolic or traditional importance to determine how knowledge, beliefs and attitudes translate into eating behaviour in older adults, especially at advanced ages. More research is needed to clarify the relative contribution of income, ethnic background and other personal predictors of healthy eating – self-control, emotions, resistance to change, time constraints, lack of knowledge – and environmental factors governing food availability and cost.
