The Missionary Review of the World has described South America as THE DARKEST LAND. That I have been able to penetrate into part of its unexplored interior, and visit tribes of people hitherto untouched and unknown, was urged as sufficient reason for the publishing of this work. In perils oft, through hunger and thirst and fever, consequent on the many wanderings in unhealthy climes herein recorded, the writer wishes publicly to record his deep thankfulness to Almighty God for His unfailing help.
About Miyamoto: Miyamoto Musashi (c.1584–June 13 (Japanese calendar: May 19), 1645), also known as Shinmen Takezō, Miyamoto Bennosuke, or by his Buddhist name Niten Dōraku was a famous Japanese samurai, and is considered by many to have been one of the most skilled swordsmen in history. Musashi, as he is often simply known, became legendary through his outstanding swordsmanship in numerous duels, even from a very young age.
At the same time, by comparing over time, case studies document that well-executed investments can
provide benefits. These accrue through four main channels, namely (i) social infrastructure, often
supported by community development funds using land compensation; (ii) employment and jobs; (iii)
access to markets and technology for local producers; and (iv) local or national tax revenue. In all cases,
economic viability of investment is a necessary condition for positive social outcomes to materialize,
including food security.
Heat loss occurs through five mechanisms: radiation (55–65% of heat loss), conduction (10–15% of heat loss, but much greater in cold water), convection (increased in the wind), respiration, and evaporation (which are affected by the ambient temperature and the relative humidity).
The preoptic anterior hypothalamus normally orchestrates thermoregulation (Chap. 17). The immediate defense of thermoneutrality is via the autonomic nervous system, whereas delayed control is mediated by the endocrine system.
As I approached it a combat ever raged betwixt the hunger of a youthful body and that of an inquiring and omnivorous mind. Five times out of six the animal won. But when the mental prevailed, then there was an entrancing five minutes’ digging among out-of-date almanacs, volumes of Scotch theology, and tables
I am a cardiologist—a physician who specializes in the prevention and
medical treatment of heart disease. I have spent the past twenty-five
years fully engaged in the battle to lower the likelihood of heart disease
for my patients and my country. In addition to my work with patients,
I have written several cardiology textbooks and continue to edit the
major intensive care textbook in the country, Irwin and Rippe’s Intensive
Care Medicine. I have also written books for the general public concerning
simple steps that we can all take to lower our risk of heart disease.
SCN, like all plant-parasitic nematodes, is a microscopic
roundworm – a very simple animal, related to the animal-
parasitic roundworms that infect livestock and pets. The
juvenile nematode [top right] is the infective stage of
SCN – the stage that actually enters the soybean root. It
hatches from an egg [right].
The juveniles penetrate soybean roots and cause the for-
mation of specialized feeding cells in the vascular system
(veins) of the roots.
The International Institute for Sustainable Development contributes
to sustainable development by advancing policy recommendations
on international trade and investment, economic policy, climate
change and energy, measurement and assessment, and sustainable
natural resources management. Through the Internet, we report on
international negotiations and share knowledge gained through
collaborative projects with global partners, resulting in more rigorous
research, capacity building in developing countries and better
dialogue between North and South.

Our paper focuses on accounting professionals in Romania as being a
significant element when considering a national accounting system
that went through complex accounting reforms of more than two
decades. Since accounting policy represents an area of social and
economic policy we must also consider the five decades of communist
regime leaving their fingerprint on the Romanian society. It is our
objective to capture the perception of the Romanian accounting
profession that actually witnessed all these processes of
Heme oxygenase-1 catalyzes the breakdown of heme and is protective in
models of kidney transplantation. In this study we describe the induction
of heme oxygenase-1 mRNA and protein by insulin. Following treatment
with insulin, a five-fold increase in heme oxygenase-1 mRNA and a four-fold increase in protein expression were observed in renal adenocarcinoma
cells; insulin-induced heme oxygenase-1 expression was also demonstrated
in mouse primary tubular epithelial cells.
Before 802.3af, vendors and consumers of IP phones
were faced with two options: Provide local power
through an AC (alternating current) electrical outlet,
or use non-standards-based proprietary solutions to
provide inline powering. Both choices were equally
A gene cluster involved in maltodextrin transport and metabolism was
identified in the genome of Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM, which
encoded a maltodextrin-binding protein, three maltodextrin ATP-binding
cassette transporters and five glycosidases, all under the control of a tran-scriptional regulator of the LacI-GalR family.
Chapter 8 "The internet and e-commerce: Creating value through e-business strategies". After studying this chapter, you should have a good understanding of: Why use of Internet technologies is more important to achieving competitive advantage than the technologies themselves, how internet technologies are affecting the five competitive forces, how e-business capabilities are affecting industry profitability,...
WASHINGTON! I say Washington!"
Throughout a big shed, filled for the most part with huge pieces of machinery,
echoed the voice of Professor Amos Henderson. He did not look
up from a small engine over which he was bending.
"Washington! Where are you? Why don't you answer me?"
From somewhere underneath an immense pile of iron, steel and aluminum
came the voice of a colored man.
"Yas sir, Perfesser, I'se goin' t' saggasiate my bodily presence in yo'
contiguous proximity an' attend t' yo' immediate conglomerated prescriptions
at th' predistined period. Yas, sir!"...
Women’s movements like International Conference on Population and
Development (ICPD) in Cairo and Women’s conference in Beijing sought
to mainstream reproductive health and gender issues in the development
discourse to establish women’s rights, ameliorate their poor health status
and to empower them (International Conference on population and
Development, 1994; Beijing declaration and Platform for action, 1995).
Previous work on statistical language generation has primarily focused on grammaticality and naturalness, scoring generation possibilities according to a language model or user feedback. More recent work has investigated data-driven techniques for controlling linguistic style without overgeneration, by reproducing variation dimensions extracted from corpora. Another line of work has produced handcrafted rule-based systems to control specific stylistic dimensions, such as politeness and personality. ...

The Strategy provides evidence-based recommendations for
improving health and wellness and addressing leading causes of
disability and death. Recommended policy, program, and system
approaches are identified for each Strategic Direction and Priority
Preference has been given to efforts that will have the greatest
