  • Probabilistic accounts of language processing can be psychologically tested by comparing word-reading times (RT) to the conditional word probabilities estimated by language models. Using surprisal as a linking function, a significant correlation between unlexicalized surprisal and RT has been reported (e.g., Demberg and Keller, 2008), but success using lexicalized models has been limited. In this study, phrase structure grammars and recurrent neural networks estimated both lexicalized and unlexicalized surprisal for words of independent sentences from narrative sources. ...

  • By the end of 2000, close to two million immigrants were residing in the Netherlands, of a total population of nearly 16 million. Among the immigrant population, 2,661 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis were identified during 1996–2000. Information about country of origin and time since immigration was missing in 3% and 13% of the study patients, respectively, and was accounted for by multiple imputation (five times) to avoid bias in the calculation of incidence rates, relative risks, and confidence intervals (1).

  • The EViews workfile is defined as a file in EViews, which provides many convenient visual ways, such as (i) to enter and save data sets, (ii) to create new series or variables from existing ones, (iii) to display and print series and (iv) to carry out and save results of statistical analysis, aswell as each equation of the models applied in the analysis.By using EViews, each statistical model that applied previously could be recalled and modified easily and quickly to obtain the best fit model, based on personal judgment using an interactive process.

  • Magnitude of the shift-invariant transmit and receive spatial correlation coefficients compared with Jakes’ model. measured data, the expectation is replaced by an average over all time samples. The transmit and receive correlation coefficients are then constructed using ρT ,q = RT ,q /RT ,0 and ρR,p = RR,p /RR,0 , respectively. Figure 1.5 shows the shift-invariant spatial transmit and receive correlation coefficient computed from the 10 × 10 data versus antenna separation p z and q z.

  • Examples of Multipath Fading Channels As discussed, when a signal is transmitted through a multipath fading channel, a channel model, which we assume, gives its received characteristics. For instance, the p.d.f. such as Rayleigh distribution and Ricean distribution describes the envelope fluctuation for an individual multipath component in the channel, the multipath intensity profile or spaced-frequency correlation function determines the frequency selectivity of the channel, and the Doppler power spectrum or spaced-time correlation function determines the time selectivity of the channel.

  • This issue of Forced Migration Review is about improving communications between logisticians and programme managers to make such mix-ups a thing of the past. We are grateful to the Fritz Institute for drawing our attention to the importance of humanitarian logistics and for the very generous grant which has made this issue possible. We are deeply indebted to our Guest Editors, Anisya Thomas (Fritz Institute's Managing Director) and Ricardo Ernst (Georgetown University), and to Lynn Fritz for his personal support.

  • One of the best ways to learn about the markets and trading is to have a mentor, an experienced person who knows the ropes thoroughly and is willing to pass along his or her knowledge to you personally. As a reporter for a wire service on every major exchange floor at one time or another, Jim Wyckoff had access to some of the best and brightest people in the business – not just one mentor but many mentors.

  • OF all branches of economic science, that part which relates to money and credit has probably the longest history and the most extensive literature. The elementary truths of the Quantity Theory were established at a time when speculation on other types of economic problem had hardly yet begun. By the middle of the nineteenth century when, in the general theory of value, a satis- factory statical system had not yet been established, the pamphlet literature of money and banking was tackling, often with marked success, many of the subtler problems of economic dynamics.

  • Digital signal processing is currently in a period of rapid growth caused by recent advances inVLSI technology. This is especially true of three areas of optimum signal pro- cessing; namely, real-time adaptive signal processing, eigenvector methods of spectrum estimation, and parallel processor implementations of optimum filtering and prediction algorithms. In this edition the book has been brought up to date by increasing the emphasis on the above areas and including several new developments.

  • The case for a rise can be put quite simply. An early increase in Bank Rate makes it more likely that the inflation target can be met in two to three years time because it allows for greater subsequent flexibility. If inflationary pressures subsequently prove more severe than the central part of our forecast suggests, then it will be a help to have started to raise interest rates earlier. But if they prove less strong then subsequent increases can be slower than would otherwise be the case. Indeed, if the economy is extremely weak, interest rates can be...

  • Diversification of the portfolio can only reduce the so-called non-systematic risk, however. The systematic risk, i.e. the interdependence of returns on changes in the overall market and/or shocks cannot be eliminated. For instance, the returns on equities and investments in specific real assets are necessarily positively correlated by the underlying economic determinants. The return on an invest- ment in equities depends e.g. on company profits and therefore also on growth.

  • Soft matter (or soft condensed matter) refers to a group of systems that includes polymers, colloids, amphiphiles, membranes, micelles, emulsions, dendrimers, liquid crystals, polyelectrolytes, and their mixtures. Soft matter systems usually have structural length scales in the region from a nanometer to several hundred nanometers and thus fall within the domain of “nanotechnology.” The soft matter length scales are often characterized by interactions that are of the order of thermal energies so that relatively small perturbations can cause dramatic structural changes in them.
