  • This paper is concerned with the problem of question search. In question search, given a question as query, we are to return questions semantically equivalent or close to the queried question. In this paper, we propose to conduct question search by identifying question topic and question focus. More specifically, we first summarize questions in a data structure consisting of question topic and question focus. Then we model question topic and question focus in a language modeling framework for search.

  • In order to be able to write good essays it is first of all essential to make sure you understand the purpose of the task. It may seem obvious: the purpose is to test your ability to write essay for university or college in English. However, a moment's reflection will make it clear that the test task is quite unlike a university essay, since it is typical one and a half (1 & 1/2) to two (2) pages long and it written on an unprepared topic in about half an hour. No university essay is like that. Even in university...

  • Data Streams: Models and Algorithms primarily discusses issues related to the mining aspects of data streams. Recent progress in hardware technology makes it possible for organizations to store and record large streams of transactional data. For example, even simple daily transactions such as using the credit card or phone result in automated data storage, which brings us to a fairly new topic called data streams.

  • The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) provided daily data on air pollution levels collected at the nine monitoring stations located throughout the city. Six of these monitors have been in operation since 1987 and are operated directly by the CPCB. The other three monitors, added to the monitoring network in 1990, are operated on behalf of the CPCB by the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI).

  • Most approaches to topic modeling assume an independence between documents that is frequently violated. We present an topic model that makes use of one or more user-specified graphs describing relationships between documents. These graph are encoded in the form of a Markov random field over topics and serve to encourage related documents to have similar topic structures. Experiments on show upwards of a 10% improvement in modeling performance. of the form of the distance metric used to specify the edge potentials. ...

  • Joint sentiment-topic (JST) model was previously proposed to detect sentiment and topic simultaneously from text. The only supervision required by JST model learning is domain-independent polarity word priors. In this paper, we modify the JST model by incorporating word polarity priors through modifying the topic-word Dirichlet priors.

  • This paper presents an unsupervised topic identification method integrating linguistic and visual information based on Hidden Markov Models (HMMs). We employ HMMs for topic identification, wherein a state corresponds to a topic and various features including linguistic, visual and audio information are observed. Our experiments on two kinds of cooking TV programs show the effectiveness of our proposed method.

  • Language model (LM) adaptation is important for both speech and language processing. It is often achieved by combining a generic LM with a topic-specific model that is more relevant to the target document. Unlike previous work on unsupervised LM adaptation, this paper investigates how effectively using named entity (NE) information, instead of considering all the words, helps LM adaptation. We evaluate two latent topic analysis approaches in this paper, namely, clustering and Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). ...

  • Patent translation is a complex problem due to the highly specialized technical vocabulary and the peculiar textual structure of patent documents. In this paper we analyze patents along the orthogonal dimensions of topic and textual structure. We view different patent classes and different patent text sections such as title, abstract, and claims, as separate translation tasks, and investigate the influence of such tasks on machine translation performance.

  • We present the development and tuning of a topic-adapted language model for word prediction, which improves keystroke savings over a comparable baseline. We outline our plans to develop and integrate style adaptations, building on our experience in topic modeling to dynamically tune the model to both topically and stylistically relevant texts.
