  • Freer-word-order languages such as German exhibit linguistic phenomena that present unique challenges to traditional CFG parsing. Such phenomena produce discontinuous constituents, which are not naturally modelled by projective phrase structure trees. In this paper, we examine topological field parsing, a shallow form of parsing which identifies the major sections of a sentence in relation to the clausal main verb and the subordinating heads.

  • Hierarchical phrase-based models are attractive because they provide a consistent framework within which to characterize both local and long-distance reorderings, but they also make it dif cult to distinguish many implausible reorderings from those that are linguistically plausible. Rather than appealing to annotationdriven syntactic modeling, we address this problem by observing the in uential role of function words in determining syntactic structure, and introducing soft constraints on function word relationships as part of a standard log-linear hierarchical phrase-based model. ...

  • The transmembrane topology of presenilins is still the subject of debate despite many experimental topology studies using antibodies or gene fusions. The results from these studies are partly contradictory and conse-quently several topology models have been proposed. Studies of preseni-lin-interacting proteins have produced further contradiction, primarily regarding the location of the C-terminus.

  • One goal of natural language generation is to produce coherent text that presents information in a logical order. In this paper, we show that topological fields, which model high-level clausal structure, are an important component of local coherence in German. First, we show in a sentence ordering experiment that topological field information improves the entity grid model of Barzilay and Lapata (2008) more than grammatical role and simple clausal order information do, particularly when manual annotations of this information are not available. ...

  • Topological Dependency Grammar (TDG) is a lexicalized dependency grammar formalism, able to model languages with a relatively free word order. In such languages, word order variation often has an important function: the realization of information structure. The paper discusses how to integrate information structure into TDG, and presents a constraint-based approach to modelling information structure and the various means to realize it, focusing on (possibly simultaneous use of) word order and tune. ...

  • The paper presents a new model for contextdependent interpretation of linguistic expressions about spatial proximity between objects in a natural scene. The paper discusses novel psycholinguistic experimental data that tests and verifies the model. The model has been implemented, and enables a conversational robot to identify objects in a scene through topological spatial relations (e.g. “X near Y”). The model can help motivate the choice between topological and projective prepositions.

  • We present a general model and conceptual framework for specifying architectures for incremental processing in dialogue systems, in particular with respect to the topology of the network of modules that make up the system, the way information flows through this network, how information increments are ‘packaged’, and how these increments are processed by the modules. This model enables the precise specification of incremental systems and hence facilitates detailed comparisons between systems, as well as giving guidance on designing new systems. ...

  • The only system which is truly secure is one which is switched off and unplugged, locked in a titanium lined safe, buried in a concrete bunker, and is surrounded by nerve gas and very highly paid armed guards. Even then, I wouldn’t stake my life on it….An open security model is the easiest to implement . Simple passwords and server security become the foundation of this model. If encryption is used, it is implemented by individual users or on servers.

  • The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) created the TCP/IP reference model because it wanted a network that could survive any conditions. The TCP/IP model has since become the standard on which the Internet is based. In 1992 the standardization of a new generation of IP, often called IPng, was supported by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). IPng is now known as IPv6.

  • The Self-Organizing Map (SOM) is a neural network algorithm, which uses a competitive learning technique to train itself in an unsupervised manner. SOMs are different from other artificial neural networks in the sense that they use a neighborhood function to preserve the topological properties of the input space and they have been used to create an ordered representation of multi-dimensional data which simplifies complexity and reveals meaningful relationships. Prof. T. Kohonen in the early 1980s first established the relevant theory and explored possible applications of SOMs. ...
