  • Consolidation of applications in cloud computing environments presents a significant opportunity for energy optimization. As a first step toward enabling energy efficient consolidation, we study the inter-relationships between energy consumption, resource utilization, and performance of consolidated workloads. The study reveals the energy performance trade-offs for consolidation and shows that optimal operating points exist. We model the consolidation problem as a modified bin packing problem and illustrate it with an example.

  • This paper reports the on-going research of a thesis project investigating a computational model of early language acquisition. The model discovers word-like units from crossmodal input data and builds continuously evolving internal representations within a cognitive model of memory. Current cognitive theories suggest that young infants employ general statistical mechanisms that exploit the statistical regularities within their environment to acquire language skills.

  • This paper presents a new approach to detecting and tracking changes in word meaning by visually modeling and representing diachronic development in word contexts. Previous studies have shown that computational models are capable of clustering and disambiguating senses, a more recent trend investigates whether changes in word meaning can be tracked by automatic methods. The aim of our study is to offer a new instrument for investigating the diachronic development of word senses in a way that allows for a better understanding of the nature of semantic change in general. ...

  • This paper discusses the task of formulating a model of linguistic performance and proposes an approach toward this goal that is oriented toward an embodiment of the model as a digital-computer program. The methodology of current linguistic theory is criticized for several of its features that render it inapplicable to a realistic model of performance, and remedies for these deficiencies are proposed.

  • I propose a computational treatment of superlatives, starting with superlative constructions and the main challenges in automatically recognising and extracting their components. Initial experimental evidence is provided for the value of the proposed work for Question Answering. I also briefly discuss its potential value for Sentiment Detection and Opinion Extraction.

  • We investigate the use of Fisher’s exact significance test for pruning the translation table of a hierarchical phrase-based statistical machine translation system. In addition to the significance values computed by Fisher’s exact test, we introduce compositional properties to classify phrase pairs of same significance values. We also examine the impact of using significance values as a feature in translation models.

  • We investigate the verbal and nonverbal means for grounding, and propose a design for embodied conversational agents that relies on both kinds of signals to establish common ground in human-computer interaction. We analyzed eye gaze, head nods and attentional focus in the context of a direction-giving task. The distribution of nonverbal behaviors differed depending on the type of dialogue move being grounded, and the overall pattern reflected a monitoring of lack of negative feedback.

  • We introduce a new categorial formalism based on intuitionistic linear logic. This formalism, which derives from current type-logical grammars, is abstract in the sense that both syntax and semantics are handled by the same set of primitives. As a consequence, the formalism is reversible and provides different computational paradigms that may be freely composed together. : On the other hand, the semantic contents obeys the following scheme: : This asymmetry may be broken by: 1.

  • In this paper we present a method to group adjectives according to their meaning, as a first step towards the automatic identification of adjectival scales. We discuss the properties of adjectival scales and of groups of semantically related adjectives and how they imply sources of linguistic knowledge in text corpora. We describe how our system exploits this linguistic knowledge to compute a measure of similarity between two adjectives, using statistical techniques and without having access to any semantic information about the adjectives. ...

  • Work at the Unit for Computer Research on the Eaglish Language at the University of Lancaster has been directed towards producing a grammatically snnotated version of the Lancaster-Oslo/ Bergen (LOB) Corpus of written British English texts as the prel~minary stage in developing computer programs and data files for providing a grammatical analysis of -n~estricted English text. From 1981-83, a suite of PASCAL programs was devised to automatically produce a single level of grammatical description with one word tag representing the word class or part of speech of each word token in the corpus.

  • I drive to work and pull into the parking lot next to my office building. I stop at the security gate. I put my key card into the card reader and the security arm goes up. I drive into the parking structure and find a parking spot. I make sure that my parking permit is showing in the windshield and I lock up. I get my briefcase out of the back seat and walk toward the building. It’s a short walk and I’m there in no time.

  • The Unified Modelling Language, or the UML, is a graphical modelling language that provides us with a syntax for describing the major elements (called artifacts in the UML) of software systems. In this course, we will explore the main aspects of the UML, and describe how the UML can be applied to software development projects. Through to its core, UML leans towards object oriented software development, so in this course, we will also explore some of the important principles of object orientation....

  • A couple of years ago, my then eleven-year-old son ran his first marathon. I watched from the curb as he crossed mile twenty-four. Together we jogged the last few miles of the race, and when he finally saw the finish line, he sprinted toward it, leaving me behind. He made it look so easy. “Next year, Mom,” he shouted over his shoulder, “we cross this line together.” I am now training to run my second marathon and my son will be running his third. You just never know where inspiration will come from.
