  • My interest in urban design began in the mid 1950s with Professor McCaughan’s history of planning lectures given in the then Department of Civic Design, University of Liverpool. At those lectures ‘Mac’ made it quite clear that he was a follower of Camillo Sitte, a Viennese architect whose main work dated from the last decade of the nineteenth century.

  • Beginning in the 1980s, microfinance pioneers started shifting the focus. Instead of farmers, they turned to people in villages and towns running “non-farm enterprises”—like making handicrafts, livestock-raising, and running small stores. The shift brought advantages: non-farm businesses tend to be less vulnerable to the vagaries of weather and crop prices, and they can generate income on a fairly steady basis. The top microlenders boast repayment rates of 98 percent and higher, achieved without requiring that loans be secured with collateral.

  • Before the eruption of Vesuvius in the year 79, Pompeii, Herculaneum, and other towns around the Bay of Naples thrived as centers of trade in wine, olive oil, and seafood. They produced abundant harvests of fruits and vegetables, and served as entry points for shipments of grain from the then Roman province of Egypt. Many vacationing Romans were attracted to the area for its temperate climate, natural beauty, hot springs, and Greek heritage. Around the second century BC, Roman aristocrats began building houses and larger villas in the region.

  • The city of Bath is not one of the largest cities in England, but certain to be one of the cities that makes the largest impression on visitors. A visit to the city centre is like going back to the 18th century Georgian period when architects and building owners transformed Bath from a relatively ordinary provincial town to a famous spa resort in a matter of years.

  • In the winter of 1998, Kate Roberts found herself on a much-needed vacation in Cape Town, South Africa. The 29-year-old British citizen was then a Managing Director at the leading advertising agency, Saatchi & Saatchi for Eastern Europe. Only the day before, the busy executive was preoccupied with the firm’s latest youth-focused marketing scheme – creating campaigns for cigarettes, candy and soda. The trip to South Africa, originally planned as a relaxing tour of vineyards and game reserves, would in fact be a life changer for her.

  • Several times each year, my assistant will buzz my intercom and tell me there’s someone on the phone who is very upset and insists on talking with “Mr. Kiplinger.” She has already offered, very courteously, to help him with his problem or refer him to someone who can, but he is adamant about talking to “the man at the top.” So what do I do? Ask my assistant to tell the caller I’m in a meeting or out of town? No, I take the call...just as my grandfather took such calls decades ago, and just as my father and I have done for many years. And if the person happened to write...

  • • There is need to diversify urban-development activities within the municipality. An outward spread of these development activities and the creation of satellite towns in areas such as Olkaria, Sulmac and Sharlimar would minimise the pressure on the natural environment, land, forests, air and water resources, as well as on the capacities of socio-economic infrastructures such as sewerage and water supply facilities and roads. This will also result in a reduction of land use conflicts, which is a major cause of environmental degradation in any given urban scenario. ...

  • Those who love with a deep reverence the work of their forefathers, whether because of the character and beauty of their handiwork, or from the historical associations which are indissolubly connected with it, cannot but regard with pain and abhorrence any cause which tends towards the demolition or destruction of the monuments of the past. To these it is a significant and distressing fact that hardly any modern English buildings or streets possess the qualities which give the value and charm to the old cities, towns, and villages of which we are the grateful inheritors.

  • Usually, towns and cities set aside or “zone” specific areas for highrise apartment buildings. You will see clusters of highrises in the downtown core. Some are apartment buildings. Some are office buildings and stores. You will also find highrise apartment buildings on the outskirts— suburban areas or suburbs—of towns and cities. Land costs in big cities are high. For that reason, there are usually many apartment buildings in big cities. Apartments can be ideal for people who cannot afford to buy a house.

  • Roger Eugene Maras (he changed his name to Maris in 1955) was born on September 10, 1934, in Hibbing, Minnesota, a small mining town in the northeast region of the state. People once called Hibbing the “Iron Capital of the World” because of the large amounts of iron ore discovered there. Roger’s ancestors came to Hibbing in the early 1900s from Croatia, which is east of Italy across the Adriatic Sea. Around 1910, Roger’s grandfather, Steve Maras, left Croatia for the United States. Once in Hibbing, Steve worked for his brother, who had already come from Croatia, at a saloon.

My mother was Caroline McAllister, daughter of John McAllister of Gerry.

  • Opposite the Thebes of the living, Khafîtnîbûs, the Thebes of the dead, had gone on increasing in a remarkably rapid manner. It continued to extend in the south-western direction from the heroic period of the XVIIIth dynasty onwards, and all the eminence and valleys were gradually appropriated one after the other for burying-places. At the time of which I am speaking, this region formed an actual town, or rather a chain of villages, each of which was grouped round some building constructed by one or other of the Pharaohs as a funerary chapel.

  • My nightmare started like this. I was standing on a deserted street in some little beach town. It was the middle of the night. A storm was blowing. Wind and rain ripped at the palm trees along the sidewalk. Pink and yellow stucco buildings lined the street, their win-dows boarded up. A block away, past a line of hibiscus bushes, the ocean churned. Florida, I thought. Though I wasn't sure how I knew that. I'd never been to Florida. Then I heard hooves clattering against the pavement. I turned and saw my friend Grover running for his life....

  • The last thing I wanted to do on my summer break was blow up another school. But there I was Monday morning, the first week of June, sitting in my mom’s car in front of Goode High School on East 81st . Goode was this big brownstone building overlooking the East River. A bunch of BMWs and Lincoln Town Cars were parked out front. Staring up at the fancy stone archway, I wondered how long it would take me to get kicked out of this place. “Just relax.” My mom didn’t sound relaxed. “It’s only an orientation tour. And remember, dear, this is Paul’s school. So try...
