In fall 2001, the RAND Corporation conducted a survey of officers and enlisted personnel who had recently returned from a deployment to Prince Sultan Air Base (PSAB) or Eskan Village in Saudi Arabia. This documented briefing reports the results of that effort, using survey data to consider the utility of a PSAB/Eskan deployment as a setting for skill broadening and competency development. In doing so, this research addresses the larger issue of whether the learning that occurs during deployments merits tracking....
We report on an experiment to track complex decision points in linguistic metadata annotation where the decision behavior of annotators is observed with an eyetracking device. As experimental conditions we investigate different forms of textual context and linguistic complexity classes relative to syntax and semantics. Our data renders evidence that annotation performance depends on the semantic and syntactic complexity of the decision points and, more interestingly, indicates that fullscale context is mostly negligible – with the exception of semantic high-complexity cases. ...
Although only one name appears on the cover, this book was very much a team efort, Erica Moor kept the project on track and ably orchestrated text, graphics, dealine and schedules to tighten the initial muddled prose into something worthy of publication. Both deserve a great deal of credit
Fortunately, the deflated bubble (along with some dividend-friendly tax legisla-
tion) brought many investors down to earth and back to the basics — investing
in companies with a proven track record of earning profits and paying dividends.
As they return to the fold, investors are beginning to realize what their parents,
Fast track route to understanding crisis management
- Covers the key areas of crisis management from crisis
planning and handling a global business crisis to crisis
- Examples and lessons from some of the world’s most
successful businesses, including Parsons Corporation, Pepsi
Cola, Johnson and Johnson and General Motors, and ideas
from the smartest thinkers, including Douglas Hearle, James

Anew year is upon us—and quite a few interesting things
have already happened. We just published our first book, for
example. The Zend PHP Certification Practice Test Book, which
I co-wrote with John Coggeshall, has just been unleashed on the
PHP community with (if I may unleash some personal pride)
extremely good results. In a separate—but far more important—
piece of news, PHP was named “language of the year 2004” by a
site that tracks language usage in the development community.
A Guide to Engineering Experiences
How do you design a video game that people love to play? In this practical guide, game designer Tynan Sylvester shows you how to create emotionally charged experiences through the right combination of game mechanics, fictional wrapping, and story. You’ll learn design principles and practices used by top studios, backed by examples from today’s most popular games. This book also takes you through the day-to-day process necessary to keep your project on track: when to build and when to test, how to work with a team, and how to avoid creative dead ends.
Information is a crucial component of today's society. With a smaller world, faster communications,
and greater interest, information relevant to a person's life, work, and recreation
has exploded. However, many believe this is not all good. Richard S. Wurman (in a book
entitled Information Anxiety) notes that the information explosion has backfired, leaving
us stranded between mere facts and real understanding.
Technological advancement in graphics and other human motion tracking hardware has promoted pushing "virtual reality" closer to "reality" and thus usage of virtual reality has been extended to various fields. The most typical fields for the application of virtual reality are medicine and engineering.
Modern teachers manage teaching and learning using a compilation of data. Teachers use this portfolio of students' standardized test scores, pre-test scores, writing samples, reading fluency recordings and behavioral referrals to select curriculum and to track students' progress.
It continues to amaze me how many people and how much time it takes to create a book of
this scope and size. From beginning to end, there are scores of dedicated professionals focused
on delivering the best book possible to you the readers.
First, I need to thank my co-authors Emmett Dulaney and Toby Skandier, as they did a
tremendous job while being under a serious time crunch. Now on to the rest of the team.
Jeff Kellum kept us on track and moving forward, which was a challenge at times. Daria
Meoli kept us organized, which is no small feat during writing....
Moving objects detection and tracking in video stream are basic fundamental and critical tasks in many computer vision applications. We have presented in this paper effectiveness increase of algorithms for moving objects detection and tracking. For this, we use additive minimax similarity function. Background reconstruction algorithm is developed. Moving and tracking objects detection algorithms are modified on the basis of additive minimax similarity function. Results of experiments are presented according to time expenses of the moving object detection and tracking. ...
This book is a step-by-step tutorial and is packed with practical examples that will make learning JIRA easy. If you want to get started with JIRA, then this is the perfect book for you. You will need to be familiar with basic computer knowledge for your or your organization's standard operating environment and to have experience with software project management.
Our measurements show that our strategy can be used as a
way to disable the communication within the Storm botnet to a
large extent. As a side effect, we are able to estimate the size of
the Storm botnet, in general a hard task . Our measurements
are much more precise than previous measurements [12, 17].
This is because measurements previously were based on passive
techniques, e.g., by observing visible network events like the
number of spam mails supposedly sent via the bots.
We are issuing 14 recommendations to NOP officials to improve program administration and internal controls. We recommend that NOP strengthen its enforcement procedures to determine what actions should be imposed on program violators, including civil penalties, and to timely issue the appropriate actions. We also recommend that officials timely resolve and track complaints from receipt through disposition.
Tepper students partner with faculty, researchers, and students
from other departments and schools, providing tech students
with a well-rounded education. Dr. Coi eld believes this is one of
the primary assets of the program. “Tepper students in the Com-
puting and Information Technology track benei t from being in a
university that values computing.
Every corner on a track has a maximum speed or limit at which it can be driven.
Your ability to find the limits of your car and yourself will determine the speed at
which you will be able to negotiate each turn.
We will always be able to go fastest with our foot to the floor and the steering wheel
pointed straight ahead. But, as we approach a turn and start turning the steering
wheel, we slow down even if we have our foot to the floor! By turning, we have
created a sideways load on...
Synthesis has both an age-structured and a size/age-structured version.
Both are capable of simultaneously examining data from several fisheries and several surveys,
each with its own pattern of selectivity. Synthesis calculates selectivity with modified logistic
functions. Parameters of these functions can take on time-specific values, thus allowing
flexibility to track changes in fishery selectivity. The goodness of fit is quantified in terms of a
log-likelihood function composed of independent terms for each kind of observation from each
type of fishery or survey.
British people have seen a sample of US public broadcasting that has been so bad that it
features as a snippet in humorous mainstream programmes. With the exception of the
handful of RSLs the impression of the majority of British people is that community based
television is so dire that no one will watch it and it has no value.
In contrast to the UK, Germany has a significantly better track record, and local stations
in the USA do actually form part of a comprehensive service.
The results for our first inquiry suggest that the system of pollution levies works.
The levies decrease the production of environmental effluents. Furthermore, increasing
the levies would reinforce their favorable impact. For the second question, we will find
no evidence that the levies alter production efficiency for most classes of mills. [This
observation is similar to US experience (Jaffe et al. (1995))]. Yet we will also observe
ample remaining opportunity to increase efficiency through improved labor productivity.
