  • When good science makes an advance it pauses and turns to reacquaint itself with the modes of thought that immediately preceded it. Science orients itself with respect to these modes of thought, examines its connections, debts and disputes with them, decides whether it is operating at a different level of analysis and with respect to different interests, conceptualisations and subject matter. The present volume is a case in point of good science in this sense. It addresses medical pluralism, a founding concept of the field of medical anthropology.

  • Object orientation has now invaded traditional relational database-management systems. Oracle™ without exception has included object-oriented features in its system. SQL is now richer due to these additional features. However, the object-oriented elements in Oracle™ will not be fully utilized without a proper database design. For example, a database application designed using a traditional database modeling, such as entity-relationship (E/R) modeling, will not be able to make use of most object-oriented features in Oracle™.

  • It is traditionally assumed that various sources of linguistic knowledge and their interaction should be formalised in order to be able to convert words into their phonemic representations with reasonable accuracy. We show that using supervised learning techniques, based on a corpus of transcribed words, the same and even better performance can be achieved, without explicit modeling of linguistic knowledge. In this paper we present two instances of this approach.

  • Earlier we presented several lines of evidence that a 67-kDa laminin binding protein (LBP) inLeishmania donovani, that is different from the putative mammalian 67-kDa laminin receptor, may play an important role in the onset of leish-maniasis, as these parasites invade macrophages in various organs after migrating through the extracellular matrix. Here we describe the membrane orientation of thisLeish-manialaminin receptor.

  • The activity of m-calpain, a heterodimeric, Ca 2+ -dependent cysteine protease appears to be modulated by membrane interactions involving oblique-orientated a-helix formation by a segment, GTAMRILGGVI, in the protein’s smaller subunit. Here, graphical and hydrophobic moment-based analyses predicted that this segment may form ana-helix with strong structural resemblance to the influenza virus peptide, HA2, a known oblique-orientateda-helix former.

  • This book uses Objects First Approach. Students learn to design with objects from the start. In more traditional approaches, students first learn "programming basics in the context of procedural programming in the small." Since this frame of reference is essentially useless when attacking large-scale problems, students must later "re-learn how to approach problems. Instructors can present material from a point of view that will "make sense" throughout the curriculum. Presentation and justification of programming principles and good techniques is easier....

  • These four purposes provide a framework for describing the oral com- munication needs of adult ESOL learners. First, adult ESOL learners need access to information and resources. For example, the needs of newly arrived immigrants and refugees include obtaining housing, medical care, and sustenance. They must also develop the speaking skills to fi nd work and subsequently to carry out the responsibilities of their employment. All of these access-oriented needs require spoken English. Numerous social needs for spoken English are related to the EFF cat- egories of voice and action.

  • Small firms drive economic growth. Research in the OECD countries consistently shows that job growth in the entrepreneurial sector is substantially higher than it is among established (corporate) incumbents (Audretsch and Thurik, 2001). More recently, the international buzz about entrepreneurship has become even more pronounced with the explosion of new technology, rise in the availability and use of equity capital and breaking down of economic and trade barriers.

  • Scala is an exciting, modern, multi-paradigm language for the JVM. You can use it to write traditional, imperative, object-oriented code. But you can also leverage its higher level of abstraction to take full advantage of modern, multicore systems. Programming Scala will show you how to use this powerful functional programming language to create highly scalable, highly concurrent applications on the Java Platform.

  • I also wish to thank Prof. Dr. Thomas Dyllick, the co-advisor of my dissertation. His intellec- tual capacity always enabled him to provide constructive feedback and orientation, which he always presented in a very friendly manner. And whenever I myself had doubts about any particular weakness in my dissertation, I could be sure he had already identified it. Finally, my thanks go to Prof. Dr. Christoph Lechner who – without having a formal role in my dis- sertation – never hesitated to challenge my thoughts and provide helpful feedback.

  • Organization scholars have long acknowledged that control processes are integral to the way in which organizations function. While control theory research spans many decades and draws on several rich traditions, theoretical limitations have kept it from generating consistent and interpretable empirical findings and from reaching consensus concerning the nature of key relationships.

  • General Theme: Nowadays the market, and neo-liberalism in general, seems to be in disarray. With support waning for an unfettered market, various critics are seeking alternatives. In this book, the idea is that a new way of thinking about the economy may be productive, particularly one that does not rely on an unregulated market to secure economic order. In this context, the notion of a ―post-market society‖ is introduced to describe this shift in orientation.

The proliferation of social media channels is mind-boggling. Publishing tools like TypePad and WordPress offer any company or customer the chance to write a blog, while microblogging on Twitter allows a rapid-fire stream of real-time commentary, complaints, and recommendations.

  • Single-crystal X-ray structure determinations of the complex between the minor-groove binder distamycin and d(GGCCAATTGG) reveal two 1 : 1 binding modes which differ in the orientation of the drug molecule in the minor groove. The two crystals were grown from different crystallization conditions and found to diffract to 2.38 and ˚ 1.85 A, respectively. The structures were refined to completion using SHELXL-93, resulting in a residual R factor of ˚ 20.30% for the 2.38-A resolution structure (including 46 ˚ water molecules) and 19.74% for the 1.
