Since the mid-1990s, local and state
education agencies increasingly have
emphasized the need to hold students,
educators, and schools accountable for
meeting high academic standards. With
the passage of the No Child Left Behind
Act in 2001, the need for accountability
was confirmed again in federal law, as
was the federal government’s commitment
to ensuring equitable access to
essential learning opportunities.

If you are a genetically typical bodybuilder or strength trainee you will have
gotten little or no satisfaction from your training. Despite having faithfully
followed conventional training instruction you will have become frustrated
and disillusioned. Conventional training methods—those which are vigorously
promoted in almost all gyms today—only work very well if you are one
of the very few who are naturally highly gifted for muscle building, or if you
are propped up with dangerous bodybuilding drugs.
As a long-standing advocate for understanding issues of cultural and ethnic
diversity, I have served as President of APA Division 45, Society for the
Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues, and currently chair the
American Psychological Association’s Commission for the Recruitment,
Retention and Training of Ethnic Minorities implementation task force
(CEMRRAT2). Both of these organizations were instrumental in the approval
of the APA Multicultural Guidelines for Practice and the promotion of empirical
research addressing mental health issues of ethnic minority clinical populations.
From April 2008 to April 2011, with the support of
grants from the Ford Foundation and the United
Nations Foundation (UNF) /United Nations Fund for
International Partnerships (UNFIP), WHO and UNFPA
developed and delivered a training programme
for their staff entitled “Strengthening capacity of
UNFPA and WHO to advocate for the integration of
sexual and reproductive health issues into national
development planning processes”.
Consistent success in selling requires certain innate talents; training and desire alone are not enough.
Putting bankers through a sales training class has never been proven to yield a permanent increase
in sales productivity unless their immediate supervisor is strongly supportive of selling. Lukewarm
compliance and simply going through the motions just won’t cut it; we need managers who are
passionate advocates committed to this program.
Restaurant wine stewards or sommeliers generally provide sensory descriptions based
on personal tasting, though accuracy may be questionable in restaurants which lack
sufficiently trained or experienced employees. Some winemakers include descriptions
with their wine shipments (Hochstein, 1994). While research into the impact of sensory
descriptions on choice is limited, their broad use and inclusion in critical wine evaluations
from The Wine Spectator and The Wine Advocate suggest a perceived importance.
As advocates for public sculpture, you can navigate through the complexities of contract-
ing to assure that the person or firm selected is the best-qualified professional for the job.
Contracting procedures should never stand in the way of good conservation. Your first task is
to educate the appropriate people in the department responsible for contracting or procure-
ment. The message is simple: Sculpture is not the same as a sidewalk, a flagpole, or a park
One day when I was a student in graduate school, the professor asked the
class to discuss whether there was enough culture and race in our counseling
psychology curriculum. To my surprise, several classmates claimed
that since we had a cross-racial counseling course, there was sufficient
attention given to these issues. I countered that, other than the minorities,
few students took this course, and voiced my feeling that issues of
culture and race needed to be integrated into every class.
The dates of the birth and death of Tacitus are uncertain, but it is probable that he was born about 54 A. D. and died after 117. He was a contemporary and friend of the younger Pliny, who addressed to him some of his most famous epistles. Tacitus was apparently of the equestrian class, was an advocate by training, and had a reputation as an orator, though none of his speeches has survived. He held a number of important public offices, and married the daughter of Agricola, the conqueror of Britain, whose life he wrote. ...
