  • This book investigates whether or not there is a causal link between personality traits and the development of alcohol abuse. Findings suggest that there is such a link: people who are inclined toward sensation-seeking are likely to consume more alcohol, and those who show high levels of psychotic and/or antisocial behavior are more inclined to have alcohol problems. The authors successfully develop and validate a measure of the Addiction-Prone Personality.

  • In the recent years, a number of recognition and authentication systems based on biometric measurements have been proposed. Algorithms and sensors have been developed to acquire and process many different biometric traits. Moreover, the biometric technology is being used in novel ways, with potential commercial and practical implications to our daily activities.

  • Genetic diversity is the fundamental source of biodiversity – the total number of genetic characters contributing to variation within species. In other words it is the measure that quantifies the variation found within a population of a given species. Genetic diversity among individuals reflects the presence of different alleles in the gene pool, and hence different genotypes within populations. Genetic diversity should be distinguished from genetic variability, which describes the tendency of genetic traits found within populations to vary (Laikre et al., 2009).

  • Until recent years, cultivars’ identification was based only on morphological and agronomic traits. However, recognition of olive cultivars based on phenotypic characters revealed to be problematic, especially in early stages of tree development. Traditionally diversity within and between olive tree cultivars was determined by assessing differences in olive tree, namely leaf shape and color, and olive fruits morphology.

  • An alternative explanation is that additional schooling could compensate for low workplace skills. While those who attend full-time MBA programs outside of the top-25 have higher test scores and higher grades than those who take the GMAT but do not attend, they may be weaker on other traits which are not easily observable but also important for labor market success. For example, obtaining an MBA may provide one with job contacts—something those who do not choose to obtain an MBA may already have.

  • Growth performance of an animal at various stages of the growth curve directly influences profitability in beef production systems (Newman and Coffey 1999). The expression of these traits is dependent on the animal’s inherent growth ability and production environment (Davis 1993). These traits directly influence carcass (Pariacote et al. 1998), reproductive and milk production traits (Burrow 2001). They also form the basis of selection in many of the genetic improvement programs due to their early expression and ease of measurement. ...

  • Every human possesses more than one virtually infallible form of identification. Known as biometrics, examples include fingerprints, iris and retinal scans, hand geometry, and other measures of physical characteristics and personal traits. Advances in computers and related technologies have made this a highly automated process through which recognition

  • All the authors take for granted the importance of control in organisations. They see it as a common trait and inevitable in all human organisations (Flamholtz, 1983; Amat, 1992), making the control function one of the most basic and indispensable in business management, although in fact, control is only one of the elements that an organisation may avail of as a management system, although it is, unquestionably, the system that contributes most greatly to improving organisational performances (Blanco, 1984).
