  • Generally, a process is defined as a sequence of events that transforms the biological materials of food products, via biochemical changes, into stable forms with added value. This can create new products or modify existing ones. Process design refers to the design of food processes and manufacturing methods, while plant design refers to the design of the whole processing plant. The processing of food is no longer as simple or straightforward as in the past. Food process design is an interdisciplinary science that is highly regarded by the food industry.

  • There is a growing demand of image processing in diverse application areas, such as multimedia computing, secured image data communication, biomedical imaging, biometrics, remote sensing, texture understanding, pattern recognition, content-based image retrieval, compression, and so on. As a result, it has become extremely important to provide a fresh look at the contents of an introductory book on image processing. We attempted to introduce some of these recent developments, while retaining the classical ones....

  • The discrete wavelet transform (DWT) algorithms have a firm position in processing of signals in several areas of research and industry. As DWT provides both octavescale frequency and spatial timing of the analyzed signal, it is constantly used to solve and treat more and more advanced problems. The DWT algorithms were initially based on the compactly supported conjugate quadrature filters (CQFs). However, a drawback in CQFs is due to the nonlinear phase effects such as spatial dislocations in multi-scale analysis.

  • Discrete wavelet transform (DWT) algorithms have become standard tools for discrete-time signal and image processing in several areas in research and industry. As DWT provides both frequency and location information of the analyzed signal, it is constantly used to solve and treat more and more advanced problems. The present book: Discrete Wavelet Transforms: Theory and Applications describes the latest progress in DWT analysis in non-stationary signal processing, multi-scale image enhancement as well as in biomedical and industrial applications....

  • Digital Signal Processing (DSP) is formally defined as a digital operation performed on an input sequence of numbers (including feedback from the result of the digital operation). The sequence of numbers can represent anything from digitised human speech to stock price data, processed to detect hidden periodicities or pattern

  • The publication of the Cooley-Tukey fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithm in 1965 has opened a new area in digital signal processing by reducing the order of complexity of some crucial computational tasks like Fourier transform and convultion from N 2 to N log 2 , where N is the problem size. The development of the major algorithms (Cooley-Tukey and split-radix FFT, prime factor algorithm and Winograd fast Fourier transform) is reviewed. Then, an attempt is made to indicate the state of the art on the subject, showin the standing of researh, open problems and implementations....

  • Computer processing is performed by transistors, which are switches with only two possible states: on and off. All computer data is converted to a series of binary numbers– 1 and 0. For example, you see a sentence as a collection of letters, but the computer sees each letter as a collection of 1s and 0s.

  • We propose a novel technique of learning how to transform the source parse trees to improve the translation qualities of syntax-based translation models using synchronous context-free grammars. We transform the source tree phrasal structure into a set of simpler structures, expose such decisions to the decoding process, and find the least expensive transformation operation to better model word reordering.

  • Discrete Wavelet Transform is a wavelet (DWT) transform that is widely used in numerical and functional analysis. Its key advantage over more traditional transforms, such as the Fourier transform, lies in its ability to offer temporal resolution, i.e. it captures both frequency and location (or time) information.

  • Globally, clinker is typically produced in rotary kilns. Rotary kilns can be either wet process or dry process kilns. Wet process rotary kilns are more energy-intensive and have been rapidly phased out over the past few decades in almost all industrialized countries except the US and the former Soviet Union.

  • This paper presents a new approach to bitext correspondence problem (BCP) of noisy bilingual corpora based on image processing (IP) techniques. By using one of several ways of estimating the lexical translation probability (LTP) between pairs of source and target words, we can turn a bitext into a discrete gray-level image. We contend that the BCP, when seen in this light, bears a striking resemblance to the line detection problem in IP.

  • Geobiology is a highly cross-disciplinary field that explores the present and past relationships that life has with non-living matter. “Biosphere meets Geosphere” per- haps most parsimoniously describes the fundamental con- cept of Geobiology. In 1991, Peter Westbroek, a Dutch paleontologist and influential protagonist of Geobiology defined the field in a book entitled “Life as a Geological Force: Dynamics of the Earth”, thus motivating a new way of thinking in the geosciences.
