When Prohibition (the Eighteenth Amendment) was repealed by State ratification
of the Twenty-first Amendment in December 1933, I was a teenager, but already
familiar with beverage alcohol. My initial contact was through religion; for centuries
alcohol in beverage form had been part of the customs of many organized religions,
customs that were and are part of the traditions of my Jewish faith. During
Prohibition, I had consumed alcohol in a family environment and also participated
in the sale of alcohol.
Alcohols are versatile organic compounds since they undergo a wide variety of transformations – the majority of which are either oxidation or reduction type reactions. In this chapter provides knowledge of reactions of alcohols. This chapter presents the following content: Deprotonation, SN1/SN2 via protonation, carbocation rearrangements,...and other contents.
Prison policies often overlook the special needs of women and their health. Many women in
prison have high levels of mental illness and drug or alcohol dependence as well as histories of
sexual and physical abuse and violence. Issues arising from gender-specific health care needs
and family responsibilities are also frequently neglected. Although women represent a small
percentage of the total prison population, their numbers are increasing and the rate of increase is
much greater than that of men.
Another important change can be traced to the 1960s and 1970s, when some producers and dealers began
testing the possibility of selling rough diamonds through alternative channels instead of the traditional
practice of selling through the unified sales channel of De Beers’ CSO (see.Figure.8).
In the 1990s major producers began breaking away from the CSO (later transformed into the Diamond
Trading Company, or DTC) to start selling their diamonds independently on the global market.
Information technology is poised on the brink of transforming healthcare. IT
is entwined with the continuing evolution of the molecular and physical sciences,
and rather than dehumanizing us, IT has the potential to continually
transform healthcare by the power of its information sharing and processing
capabilities. IT particularly has the power to restore good aspects of healthcare
based on a personalized and holistic approach, which has been progressively
lost, and increasingly so since the Industrial Revolution and the escalating
patient - to - physician ratios of the last century...

Reduction of exogenous ketones depends upon NADPH generated photosynthetically in cells of the cyanobacterium Synechococcus PCC 7942

Abstract Effective utilization of photosynthetic microorganisms as potential biocatalysts is favorable for the production of useful biomaterials and the reduction of atmospheric CO2. For example, biocatalytic transformations are used in the synthesis of optically active alcohols.
a-Bisabolol is a natural monocyclic sesquiterpene alcohol. It has been used
in cosmetics for hundreds of years because of its perceived skin-healing
properties. a-Bisabolol is known to have anti-irritant, anti-inflammatory
and antimicrobial properties. In precedent studies, we described how
a-bisabolol exerts a selective pro-apoptotic action towards transformed cells
