The island nation of Cape Verde has given rise to a diaspora that spans the four continents of the Atlantic Ocean. Migration has been essential to the island since the birth of its nation and connections to faraway places continue to dominate its day-to-day life. This volume makes a significant contribution to the study of international migration and transnationalism by exploring the Cape Verdean diaspora through its geographic diversity and broad thematic range.

Food technology and safety research financed by the European Commission
has the obvious objective of enhancing the quality of life, in the short term as
well as in a long-term perspective. Research as such is most often seen as a
long-term activity and even the most applied research should be regarded as

innovations in political and administrative decision-making have multiplied

authority. Or so we are told. Whether busy modernizing constitutional
structures or realigning public services along market-led lines, our political
representatives have proclaimed a new era of open and responsive government.

recently been increasing in a drastic way and have profoundly transformed the world
(Ritzer and Malone, 2001). This phenomenon has been labeled globalization. As a result, a
great deal of debate and discussion, even controversy (Bird and Stevens, 2003) has taken
place about globalization in various disciplines from different angles. In fact, there seems to
be a controversy in regards to globalization and the contradictory meanings associated with
he specific country cultures are not only different in regard to their health systems, but also in integrating gender aspects in research, policy and practice. The very definitions of health, illness and health related social problems are different. If networks focus on gender specific aspects of health and illness, the necessity for transnational communication is evident.
