The Workshop on Energy and Transportation took place on January 7-9,
2002, in Washington, DC. This workshop was the second in a series of workshops
that comprise the study Challenges in the Chemical Sciences in the 21st
Century. The purpose of this study was to carry out a survey of the current status
of the chemical sciences, including chemistry and chemical engineering, and its
interfaces with other disciplines such as mechanical engineering, physics, materials
science, and the biological sciences.
In August 1999, the Transportation Research Board (TRB) held a workshop at the
request of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to examine its
Small Aircraft Transportation System (SATS) concept.
Estimating the transport and fate of chemicals released into the environment is an
interesting and challenging task. The global environment is large on the chemical
transport and fate scale. This text applies the mathematics of diffusion, turbulent
diffusion, and dispersion to the atmosphere, lakes, rivers, groundwater, and oceans, as
well as transport between these media. The book follows a new educational paradigm
of textbooks, in that it is based on examples and case studies.
Globalization has forever changed the way we develop, communicate, and learn. Globalization
has also launched the new challenges and opportunities fundamentally affect our economic
prosperity and government policy, along with its related parties, making judgments and
decisions about the future. The new world of change requires new ways of thinking about
transportation, including thinking about new tools, new alliances, and a new architecture.
The rapid development of information technology and communications has created an opportunity to improve the efficiency of road traffic by using Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). The combination between transport participants, vehicles and road traffic infrastructure through using roadside equipments and traffic control centers takes a part in improving the efficiency of the transportation system and quality of transportation services.

By their very nature, every book that seeks to describe how technology
works face challenges during its creation. Dealing with beta software and
attempting to resolve the difference between how the software works and
how the developers say it will work in the final version is a problem faced by
any author, which is one reason why it is often best to wait to finalize text

an operator who has acted as a “human-in-the-loop” controller for a process. In
the fuzzy control design methodology, we ask this operator to write down a set of
rules on how to control the process, then we incorporate these into a fuzzy controller
that emulates the decision-making process of the human.
