Cats are not dogs. Small dogs are plagued primarily
with various degrees of periodontal disease (gingivitis
and periodontitis). Large dogs more commonly present
with gingivitis, fractured teeth, and oral masses. Feline
Dentistry: Oral Assessment, Treatment, and Preventative
Care was born primarily to give cats their fair due, a
book on dentistry dedicated solely to their species.
Cats also are affected by periodontal disease and fractured
teeth, but their main oral pathologies include
tooth resorption, oropharangyeal infl ammation, and
Since the first edition of Breast Cancer: Prognosis, Treatment and Prevention was
published there has been a tremendous amount of new information related to the basic
and clinical applications of this disease which can affect 1 of 8 people in the USA and
1 of 12 in European countries.

The scourge of suicidal behavior touches many lives and knows few
boundaries. About 30,000 people are known to take their own lives in the
United States each year. In addition, many of those deaths recorded as accidental
or undetermined by coroners and medical examiners may have
been motivated by suicidal intent. Suicide is the eighth leading cause of
death in this country and, among young people 15 to 19 years of age,
suicide is exceeded in frequency as a cause of death only by accidental
With the exceptions of EMBASE, Agricola and the Internet,
selection of articles from the library databases and the
International Journal of Obesity were carried out in dupli-
cate by two independent researchers blinded to each other’s
selections. The continuously changing nature of the Inter-
net impeded a duplicate selection. Because of time con-
straints, selection was not carried out in duplicate for
Agricola and Embase, which were added after the first
search had been conducted.
Many have endeavored to make our outdoor environment cleaner and safer. The learning
process that occurred showed us the limitations of our planet and also the sustainability
of our ecosystem if given a chance. As a community, we learned about the water, the soil,
and the air. We learned about the underground river that flowed to the surface lake. We
learned about air currents that transported airstreams around our globe. We discovered the
reality of plate tectonics and the ever-changing hydrogeological system.
Micro-organisms are mostly harmless,
non-pathogenic, and indeed may be beneficial.
It is estimated that a human body has about
10" cells, but only 10% of these are human in
origin; the rest is almost entirely microbial flora.
Medical microbiology is the study of microscopic
organisms and their effect on man. It encompasses
their biology, diagnosis, treatment and prevention.
This book is intended to present current concepts in molecular biology with the emphasis on the application to animal, plant and human pathology, in various aspects such as etiology, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and prevention of diseases as well as the use of these methodologies in understanding the pathophysiology of various diseases that affect living beings.
In the last 20 years, a number of epidemiological studies have shown that tumor formation and
incidence of cardiovascular diseases are inversely related to the intake of fruit and vegetables
(Verhoeven et al., 1996). One group of vegetables that has been widely approved for its benefi cial
effects on human health are the vegetables from the family Brassicaceae (= Cruciferae). The family
Brassicaceae is a large group, having about 3000 species in 350 genera, including several types of
edible plants, which are sometimes referred to as “the cabbage family.
An important part of evaluating the auditor’s objectivity and professional skepticism is for the audit committee to gauge
the frankness and informative nature of responses to open-ended questions put to the lead audit engagement partner (and
members of the audit engagement team as appropriate).
Harrison's Internal Medicine Chapter 127. Treatment and Prophylaxis of Bacterial Infections
Treatment and Prophylaxis of Bacterial Infections: Introduction
The development of vaccines and drugs that prevent and cure bacterial infections was one of the twentieth century's major contributions to human longevity and quality of life. Antibacterial agents are among the most commonly prescribed drugs of any kind worldwide. Used appropriately, these drugs are lifesaving.
Although the number of new infections among children has decreased
sharply over the past several years (as noted previously in this report),
greater efforts are needed to ensure that progress continues. Most cases
of HIV infection among infants and children stem from insufficient
information and counselling provision among women in regards
to HIV/AIDS and sexual and reproductive rights and the lack of adequate
antenatal care during pregnancy. Respondents consider all new cases to
be inexcusable given the broad prevention mechanisms
Various needles were used to collect tissue for cytological or histological diagnosis. Franzen
et al. developed a fine needle and guide for prostatic aspiration by the transrectal route
(figure 8). The Franzen needle and guide were designed to allow accurate needle placement
into the abnormal area palpated by the fingertip. It was secured by the metal ring fixed to
the fingertip and a plate in the palm of the hand. A rubber fingerstall was pulled over it and
a 23- or 25-gauge needle was used. Up to six passes could be made in one session (Berner
and Orell, 2010).
Disease-Specific Nutritional Support
SNS is basically a support therapy and is primary therapy only for the treatment or prevention of malnutrition. Certain conditions require modification of nutritional support because of organ or system impairment. For instance, in nitrogen accumulation disorders, protein intake may need to be reduced. However, in renal disease, except for brief periods of several days, protein intakes should approach requirement levels of at least 0.8 g/kg or higher up to 1.2 g/kg as long as the blood urea nitrogen does not exceed 100 mg/dL.
Results from the univariate analysis of prostate cancer mortality and incidence do not take
into account the effect of different covariables, which might influence the SMR and SIR.
Various covariables where considered to model longitudinal effects: age, calendar year, year
of immigration, length of stay in Germany; cohort was considered for the analysis of
Multivariate Poisson regression did not show any significant effect of the considered
covariables on mortality (data not shown).
The development of vaccines and drugs that prevent and cure bacterial infections was one of the twentieth century's major contributions to human longevity and quality of life. Antibacterial agents are among the most commonly prescribed drugs of any kind worldwide. Used appropriately, these drugs are lifesaving. However, their indiscriminate use drives up the cost of health care, leads to a plethora of side effects and drug interactions, and fosters the emergence of bacterial resistance, rendering previously valuable drugs useless. ...
