Climate dynamicists generally characterize the Hadley circulation in
terms of some derived meteorological parameters, such as the mass stream
function (the nondivergent part of the flow) or the velocity potential (the
divergent circulation), both of which are based on measurements of the
three-dimensional wind field. Yet, we know very little about how such indices
have varied in the past—beyond the most recent decades.
Assignment Question The Cyclonic Department of Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory are planning to take a seminar on the topic “Tropical Cyclone” to civilians. Therefore, the department assigns its different teams with the task of collecting information on various stages of a tropical cyclone.
Zubkov et al. (2000) found that Prochlorococcus spp. were the dominant cyanobacteria in the
northern and southern Atlantic gyres and the equatorial region, giving way to Synechococcus
spp. in cooler waters. Synechococcus cells also become more numerous and even reach
blooming densities near the tropical region affected by the Mauritanian upwelling. Finally,
the concentrations of Picoeukaryotes tend to be at their height in temperate waters.
A golden Easter day was that of the far-away year 1513, when a small fleet of Spanish ships, sailing westward
from the green Bahamas, first came in sight of a flower-lined shore, rising above the blue Atlantic waves, and
seeming to smile a welcome as the mariners gazed with eyes of joy and hope on the inviting arcades of its
verdant forest depths. Never had the eyes of white men beheld this land of beauty before. English ships had
sailed along the coast to the north, finding much of it bleak and uninviting. The caravels of Columbus had
threaded the glowing line of tropic isles,...
