  • In Chapter 1 we present in detail a framework for fully automated brain tissue classification. The framework consists of a sequence of fully automated state of the art image registration (both rigid and nonrigid) and image segmentation algorithms. Models of the spatial distribution of brain tissues are combined with models of expected tissue intensities, including correction of MR bias fields and estimation of partial voluming. We also demonstrate how this framework can be applied in the presence of lesions....

  • The mammalian natriuretic peptide system, consisting of at least three ligands and three receptors, plays critical roles in health and disease. Exam-ination of genetically engineered animal models has suggested the signifi-cance of the natriuretic peptide system in cardiovascular, renal and skeletal homeostasis.

  • A tri-functional monomeric primase–polymerase domain encoded by the plasmid pIT3 fromSulfolobus solfataricusstrain IT3 was identified using a structural–functional approach. The N-terminal domain of the pIT3 repli-cation protein encompassing residues 31–245 (i.e. Rep245) was modeled onto the crystallographic structure of the bifunctional primase–polymerase domain of the archaeal plasmid pRN1 and refined by molecular dynamics in solution.

  • The complexity of full-scale metabolic models is a major obstacle for their effective use in computational systems biology. The aim of model reduction is to circumvent this problem by eliminating parts of a model that are unimportant for the properties of interest.

  • Cellular regulation is a result of complex interactions arising from DNA–protein and protein–protein binding, autoreg-ulation, and compartmentalization and shuttling of regula-tory proteins. Experiments in molecular biology have identified these mechanisms recruited by a regulatory net-work.Mathematicalmodelsmaybe used to complement the knowledge-base provided byin vitroexperimental methods. Interactions identified byin vitroexperiments can lead to the hypothesis of multiple candidate models explaining the in vivo mechanism. ...

  • Amathematicalmodel hasbeendevelopedtostudy theeffect of external tryptophan on the trp operon. The model accounts for the effect of feedback repression by tryptophan through the Hill equation. We demonstrate that the trp operonmaintains an intracellular steady-state concentration in a fivefold range irrespective of extracellular conditions. Dynamic behavior of thetrp operon corresponding to varying levels of extracellular tryptophan illustrates the adaptive nature of regulation.

  • The tumor suppressor p16 INK4a has functions beyond cell-cycle control via cyclin-dependent kinases. A coordinated remodeling ofN- and O-glycosyla-tion, and an increase in the presentation of the endogenous lectin galectin-1 sensing these changes on the surface of p16 INK4a -expressing pancreatic carcinoma cells (Capan-1), lead to potent pro-anoikis signals.

  • To achieve a structural context for the analysis of G-protein coupled recep-tor (GPCR) oligomers, molecular modeling must be used to predict the corresponding interaction interfaces. The task is complicated by the paucity of detailed structural data at atomic resolution, and the large number of possible modes in which the bundles of seven transmembrane (TM) seg-ments of the interacting GPCR monomers can be packed together into dimers and⁄or higher-order oligomers.

  • Tumor suppressor genes (TSGs) and their signaling networks are fast growing areas in current biomedical science. These groups of genes, which are not limited to tumor suppression, play critical roles in many cellular activities. This book, "Future Aspects of Tumor Suppressor Genes", contains some fascinating fields, from basic to translational researches, in recent TSG studies. For example, several TSG signaling pathways are addressed in this book, and both mouse and Drosophila models used for the exploration of these genes are described based on the experimental evidence....

  • Chapter 1 presents IVUS. Intravascular ultrasound images represent a unique tool to guide interventional coronary procedures; this technique allows to supervise the cross-sectional locations of the vessel morphology and to provide quantitative and qualitative information about the causes and severity of coronary diseases. At the moment, the automatic extraction of this kind of information is performed without taking into account the basic signal principles that guide the process of image generation....

  • The third part of the book is dedicated to analysis of role of DNA methylation in cancer. According to the American Cancer Association, nearly 13% of all deaths worldwide are cancer related. Aberrant DNA methylation patterns is likely to play a causative role in cancer initiation and development. The first chapter is dedicated to investigation of DNA methylation role in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma associated with tyrosinemia.

  • Longmire, called it a "hostile" organ because it welcomes malignant cells and sepsis so warmly, bleeds so copiously, and is often the ?rst organ to be injured in blunt abdominal trauma. To balance these negative factors, the liver has two great attributes: its ability to regenerate after massive loss of substance, and its ability, in many cases, to forgive insult. This book covers a wide spectrum of topics including, history of liver surgery, surgical anatomy of the liver, techniques of liver resection, benign and malignant liver tumors, portal hypertension, and liver trauma.

  • The mechanisms accounting for poor expression of the BCR in CLL remain elusive. There is no evidence of genetic defects in the BCR components [62, 63] and in contrast with their poor expression at the membrane level, transcription and intra-cellular synthesis of BCR components are normal [63, 64]. However, they cannot be assembled and transported from the endoplasmic reticulum to the cell surface because of a folding and glycosolation defect of the mu and CD79a chains though not of the CD79b chain.

  • It has been said that the control of disease has three goals, which, in increasing order of attraction are palliation, cure, and prevention. For most types of disseminated cancer, medical science has achieved only the first of these objectives, while for some malignancies the side effects of the therapeutic agents employed rival the disease itself in precluding a desirable quality of life.
