  • Performance has been an important issue with Java™ since the first version hit the Web years ago. Making those first interpreted programs run fast enough was a huge challenge for many developers. Since then, Java performance has improved enormously, and any Java program can now be made to run fast enough provided you avoid the main performance pitfalls. This book provides all the details a developer needs to performance-tune any type of Java program.

  • The fabricated pores were found to be stable at ambient conditions and in water. The pore-size tuning technique was further tested on holes fabricated using a different process. In agreement with Chen et al. 5 ,we find that a focused electron beam with a spot size of a few nanometres can be used to drill holes in thin free-standing SiO2 membranes, with an estimated thickness of about 10 nm (Fig. 3a). Figure 3b,c shows a pore that has been drilled using an electron-beam intensity above 1×108 Am–2 .

  • Data design is an essential part of the application development cycle. By analogy, building an application is like building a house. Having the right tools is important, but we need a solid foundation: the data structure. However, producing a good data structure can be a daunting challenge; the quest for a perfect data structure can lead us to new territories where many methods are available. Which one is the best? How can we keep our focus on the goal to achieve, without losing our time?

  • In the quest for knowledge, it is not uncommon for researchers to push the limits of simulation techniques to the point where they have to be adapted or totally new techniques or approaches become necessary. True multiscale modeling techniques are becoming increasingly necessary given the growing interest in materials and processes on which large-scale properties are dependent or that can be tuned by their low-scale properties. An example would be nanocomposites, where embedded nanostructures completely change the matrix properties due to effects occurring at the atomic level.

  • For each extracted TCP connection, we record the sequence of size, arrival time tuples for each packet in the connection, in arrival order. We encode the packet’s direction in the sign bit of the packet’s size, so that packets sent from server to client have size less than zero and those from client to server have size greater than zero. Since the traces in this data set consist mostly of unencrypted, non-tunneled TCP connections, a few additional preprocessing steps are necessary to simulate the more challenging scenarios which our techniques are designed to address.

  • The hole closing reported in this letter is certainly not caused by deposition of carbon-rich material by the electron beam, a common phenomenon in electron microscopy. The observation that large pores expand is in direct contradiction with potential contamination growth. Secondly, electron-energy-loss spectra (EELS) locally obtained on the material that filled a nanopore clearly show the presence of silicon and oxygen, but the absence of any carbon (detection limit was less than 2%).

  • The Early Years at Oracle Through the Eyes of Bruce Scott Prior to forming Oracle, Bob Miner was Larry Ellison’s manager when they worked at Ampex together on a CIA project code-named “Oracle.” Larry chose Bob as his manager because he liked Bob a lot more than his original manager. • What is SWOT Analysis? A SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) is a tool used to provide a general or detailed snapshot of a company's health. Think of your SWOT as a tune-up that every business needs periodically to diagnose and fix what’s a bit worn, what’s on the verge of breaking down, or what’s already broken and needs replacement--so that you can keep the business humming—even better than it has in the past. SWOT offers professional managers an effective evaluative technique to aid the decision making process.

  • The explosion of new technologies in the post-genomic era is allowing the study of biological systems on a genome-wide scale, at the main functional genomic levels: (epi)-genome, transcriptome, proteome, endo- and exometabolome, and their interactions. At the same time that these techniques are being applied and refined, the complexity of biological systems is being rediscovered (1) with thousands of components (e.g., genes, transcripts, proteins, metabolites) participating in finely tuned metabolic and regulatory networks.

  • Overview The use of function approximation actually has a long history in control systems. For instance, we use function approximation ideas in the development of models for control design and analysis, and conventional adaptive control generally involves the on-line tuning of linear functions (linear approximators) to match unknown linear functions (e.g., tuning a linear model to match a linear plant with constant but unknown parameters) as we discussed in Chapter 1.
