  • The use of acoustic energy in food or bioprocessing operations is a relatively new endeavor if compared with other sources of energy, such as mechanical or thermal, which have been utilized for centuries in various applications. There are two important factors that make the current ultrasound-assisted processes possible. One is related with the development in ultrasound generation technology and the other one is the better understanding of interactions between acoustic energy and liquid media, enabling the development of important guidelines for ultrasound-based processes....

  • Ultrasound is one of the most widely used imaging modalities in pediatric radiology and is set to continue to grow and develop as computing and equipment improves and new applications become available. Children are ideally suited to ultrasound, since their low levels of body fat contribute to ultrasound images of exquisite detail. This book is intended as a practical starting point for radiologists, sonographers and other medical healthcare professionals undertaking ultrasound examinations in children, providing all necessary normative charts and guidelines on examining techniques....

  • Ultrasound has become an integral component of obstetric care, with the vast majority of patients having at least one ultrasound examination during pregnancy. From the determination of early pregnancy and gestational age to the evaluation of fetal growth and well being, ultrasound is a valuable diagnostic tool for the practicing obstetrician. Recent advances in obstetric ultrasonography have increased its importance in managing pregnancies at risk for aneuploidy, structural anomalies, preterm delivery, and blood flow abnormalities. ...

  • This review is for the 3rd Edition of Edelman's Understanding Ultrasound Physics. As Mr. Ridgeway noted in his review, this book has a bronze cover and is the most recent edition. Dr. Edelman presents the concepts in an orderly manner. Each chapter is a building block to the next. He words the material in a way that the average person can understand. Many ultrasound physics texts use terminology and principles which are far more technical, detailed and complex than necessary. Not this one!

  • It is well-known that, in the past few decades, imaging techniques, and in particular ultrasonography, have led to great advances in clinical hepatology. In fact, the widespread use of these techniques resulted in the clinical discovery of hepatocellular carcinoma and other liver tumours. Hepatocellular carcinoma was practically unknown to the clinician before the advent of diagnostic ultrasound.

  • An English translation of L’Echographie Générale en Réanimation was necessary, after two French versions in 1992 and 2002. Ultrasound has, it is true, gained a more important place in emergency and intensive care medicine.Technological evolution alone does not explain this popularity. Technology develops extremely quickly, but we have always suggested – and continue to do so – that before rushing to the most modern ultrasound units, we should already make optimal use of so-called obsolete devices.

  • Medical ultrasound imaging is a technique that has become much more prevalent than other medical imaging techniques since it is more accessible, less expensive, safe, simpler to use and produces images in the real time. However, images produced by an ultrasound imaging system, must be of sufficient quality to provide accurate clinical interpretation.

  • Ultrasound imaging is considered one of the most powerful techniques for medical diagnosis and is often preferred over other medical imaging modalities because of noninvasive, portable, versatile and low-cost properties (Webb, 2002; Abd-Elmoniem, 2002; Porter, 2001; Shekhar, 2002). A fundamental problem in the field of ultrasound imaging is the speckle noise influence, which is a major limitation on image quality inultrasound imaging.

  • Multiplanar 3D US imaging is thought to provide more spatial information and allow easier anatomic assessment than the conventional two-dimensional ultrasound imaging. Contrast- enhanced three-dimensional ultrasound (CE 3D US) imaging is a new medical imaging technique that uses reflections of microbubbles to clearly depict blood vessels and allows the images to be displayed spatially at different visual angles.

  • Rather than focusing on earlier treatments, based largely on the simplifications of geometrical acoustics, Physical Principles of Medical Ultrasonics examines concepts of wave acoustics, introducing them in the very first chapter. Practical implications of these concepts are explored, first the generation and nature of acoustic fields, and then their formal descriptions and measurement. Real tissues attenuate and scatter ultrasound in ways that have interesting relationships to their physical chemistry, and the book includes coverage of these topics.

  • The inspiration for medical ultrasonography dates to the development of SONAR (Sound Navigation and Ranging) first used in a French ocean liner in 1928. Another important research milestone was the discovery of the piezoelectric effect by Pierre Curie in 1880. The phenomenon of expansion and contraction of piezoelectric crystals which interconvert mechanical and electric energy underlies the action of the modern ultrasound transducer.

  • The purpose of this book is to provide both an introduction and a state-of-the-art review of the essential physics and signal processing principles of diagnostic ultrasound in a single reference volume with a unified approach. This book draws together many of the ideas from seminal papers, the author’s research, and other sources in a single narrative and point of view. Unlike texts that present only the theory of acoustic fundamentals, this book relates topics to each other in the context of ultrasound imaging and practical application.

  • Diagnostic ultrasound is a rapidly developing imaging technology widely used in both industrialized and developing countries, as stated by a WHO Study Group in 1996. Ultrasound is especially suitable for poorer countries even outside the centers of population, since ultrasound does not need a sophisticated infrastructure or expensive installations, but can be used with transportable units even without a direct branch connection.

  • We wrote this second edition of the Handbook in an attempt to help physicians and sonographers learn practical and useful ultrasound concepts that can be applied daily in the echocardiography laboratory. Our goal is to help improve the quality of day-to-day echocardiographic studies as performed in the real world. We have broadly expanded subject content to serve as a study guide for both the physician preparing for the ASEeXAM and the sonographer studying for the RDCS or RCS examination.
