  • In its narrowest sense, a synonym is a word or phrase that is perfectly substitutable in a context for another word or phrase. People who study language professionally agree that there is no such thing as an ideal synonym, for it is virtually impossible to find two words or phrases that are identical in denotation (meaning), connotation, frequency, familiarity, and appropriateness. Indeed, linguists have long noted the economy of language, which suggests that no language permits a perfect fit,...

  • This paper argues that languages differ in whether they possess pragmatic presuppositions in the sense of Stalnaker (1974). I will argue for this somewhat radical claim on the basis of data from St’át’imcets (a.k.a. Lillooet, Northern Interior Salish). I will show that St’át’imcets displays no evidence for presuppositions which place constraints on the common ground of the discourse.

  • In 2001 I was contacted by a consortium of research institutions and wind energy interests with a request to provide some background information on the operational characteristics of acoustic radars or SODARs. The consortium partners had set up and been funded for an European EU project to evaluate SODARs as a tool in monitoring wind flows at wind turbine sites. They felt reasonably confident in their knowledge of SODARs and had purchased some instruments, but wanted to be able to consult on any more complex issues which arose.

  • Things are said to be named ‘equivocally’ when, though they have a common name, the definition corresponding with the name differs for each. Thus, a real man and a figure in a picture can both lay claim to the name ‘animal’; yet these are equivocally so named, for, though they have a common name, the definition corresponding with the name differs for each. For should any one define in what sense each is an animal, his definition in the one case will be appropriate to that case only.

  • Space research is one of the most evocative and challenging fields of human endeavour. In the half-century that has elapsed since the beginning of the space age, we have been exposed to wonders beyond the imagination of even the most visionary of science fiction writers. We have peered deep into the Universe and studied physics that we can never duplicate on the Earth. We have begun to understand our own Sun, and the flow of energy outward through the Solar System that is fundamental to our existence.

  • The potential for eGovernment in developing countries, however, remains largely unexploited, even though. ICT is believed to offer considerable potential for the sustainable development of eGovernment. Different human , organizational and technological factors, issues and problems pertain in these countries, requiring focused studies and appropriate approaches. ICT, in general, is referred to as an “enabler”, but on the other hand it should also be regarded as a challenge and a peril in itself.

  • This section develops an econometric framework that allows an investor to combine in- formation in the data with prior beliefs about both pricing and skill. Nonbenchmark assets allow us to distinguish between pricing and skill, and they supply additional information about funds' expected returns. In addition, nonbenchmark assets help account for common variation in funds' returns, making the investment problem feasible using a large universe of funds.

  • We all know that keeping a positive attitude can affect our mental and physical health. So main- taining a certain amount of calm and acceptance about your circumstances can set the tone for your family interactions. If the parent with PD is con- stantly complaining or embarrassed, kids will pick up on that and act the same way. Of course, that’s not to say that you have to keep everyone’s spirits up all the time. You need to experience your own emotions and give them validation. The key is to not get caught up in your emotions and let them drag you down.

  • Nature has a rather splendid way of impressing us. There are few who have not been overwhelmed, time after time, by a sense of awe at the beauty of a glorious sunset, the sight of distant mountains shrouded in a soft blue haze of mist, or the brilliance of a starlit night. As a child, I found myself fascinated by the mysterious patterns of the constellations, the faint glow of the Milky Way, and the slow movements of the planets across the night sky. I devoured books on astronomy and even managed to build a small telescope to study the sky in greater detail. It allowed me...

A human expects certain things of an auto- mobile’s (car, truck, jeep, HumVee, etc.) mobility system (wheels, sus- pension, and steering) and uses those many and powerful sensors to guide that mobility system’s efforts to traverse difficult terrain. The robot’s mobility system must be passively very capable, the car’s mobil- ity system must feel right to a human....

  • 21 Unit Two PHYSICS Physics is the major science dealing with the fundamental constituents of the universe, the forces they exert on one another, and the results produced by these forces. Sometimes in modern physics a more sophisticated approach is taken that incorporates elements of the three areas listed above; it relates to the laws of symmetry and conservation, such as those pertaining to energy, momentum, charge, and parity. Physics is closely related to the other natural sciences and, in a sense, encompasses them. ...
