  • B Semi-colon (;) We can use a semi-colon between two separate statements which are linked in meaning. Melanie is a very kind person; she visits David in hospital every day. We could also use a full stop here. C Colon (:) We can use a colon before an explanation or before a list. Vicky felt nervous: she hated the dark. There wasn't much in the fridge: a couple of sausages, some butter, half a bottle of milk.

  • Established in 1995, the Interstate Technology & Regulatory Council (ITRC) is a state-led, national coalition of personnel from the environmental regulatory agencies of some 40 states and the District of Columbia; three federal agencies; tribes; and public and industry stakeholders. The organization is devoted to reducing barriers to, and speeding interstate deployment of, better, more cost-effective, innovative environmental techniques.

  • Cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA) is a holoenzyme that consists of a regulatory (R) subunit dimer and two catalytic (C) subunits that are released upon stimulation by cAMP. Immunoblotting and immunoprecipita-tion of T-cell protein extracts, immunofluorescence of permeabilized T cells and RT⁄PCR of T-cell RNA using C subunit-specific primers revealed expression of two catalytically active PKA C subunits Ca1 (40 kDa) and Cb2 (47 kDa) in these cells.

  • In the 40s the first computers were built. The very first models were ‘programmed’ by means of huge connection boards. Soon the program was stored in computer memory, introducing the first programming languages. Because in those days computer use was very expensive, it was obvious to have the programming language resemble the architecture of the computer as close as possible. A computer consists of a central processing unit and a memory. Therefore a program consisted of instructions to modify the memory, executed by the processing unit. With that the imperative programming style arose.

  • Purpose: To understand the importance of working together. Time: 45 minutes Materials: Six envelopes labeled A, B, C, D, E, and F. In each envelope is a square cut into 5 pieces- use hard cardboard to cut the patterns. Note: This is for a class size of 30 students. If you have over 40 students, increase the number of squares or cut pieces per square.

  • On June 2, 2002, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) convened a group of individuals in Washington, D.C., to discuss owner-authorized handguns. Some 40 people with diverse back- grounds took part in the one-day workshop (see Appendix A). This report is a summary of the workshop discussions, which focused on three topics: the state of the art of technology for creating owner-authorized handguns, liability concerns affecting the development and use of such firearms, and the potential impact of these devices on health and crime in the United States (see Appendix B)....

  • A reduced water supply can be tolerated by a number of species of desert-adapted animals and under these conditions its use becomes more efficient. Efficiency of use and dehydration tolerance vary among species. Among domestic animals kept under the same conditions, cattle lose water three times faster than camels (equivalent to 6.1% of body weight per day at day/night temperatures of 40°C/25°C) and sheep two to two and a half times faster (4 to 5% of body weight).

  • This report describes an efficient strategy for amplified functional purification of the human H1 receptor after heterologous expression in Sf9 cells. The cDNA encoding a C-terminally histidine-tagged (10xHis) human histamineH1 receptor was used to generate recombinant baculovirus in a Spodoptera frugiperda-derived cell line (IPLB-Sf9). As judged from its ligand affinity profile, functional receptor could be expressed at high levels (30–40 pmol per 10 6 cells).

  • Catalytic oxidation of m-xylene was carried out over the copper oxide catalyst loaded on SiO2 300 m2/g. The various techniques were used to characterize the catalysts x-ray diffraction, TPRH2, N2 adsorption-desorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), tranmission electron microscopy (TEM) and CO pulse chemisorptions. The results indicate that the impregnated solution concentration exerts an influence on the catalytic activity.

  • Nanometer perovskite-type complex oxide La1-xSrxMnO3 was prepared by sol-gel method using citrate ion as ligand. The formation process of La1-xSrxMnO3was investigated by DTA, TGA, DTGA, TEM and XRD. The BET surface area of the obtained perovskite was also determined. The results show that the nanocrystalline structure maybe created since the temperature 260o C. When the calcining temperature increases from 260o C to 600o C so the particle size raises from 10 nm to 40 nm and BET surface area decreases from 13,467 m2 /g to 6,273 m2 /g.

  • The temperature-induced structural transitions of the full length Alzheimer amyloid b-peptide [Ab(1–40) peptide] and fragments of it were studied using CD and 1 H NMR spectroscopy. The full length peptide undergoes an overall transition from a state with a prominent population of left-handed 31 (polyproline II; PII)-helix at 0C to a random coil state at 60C, with an averageDH of 6.8 ± 1.4 kJÆmol )1 per residue, obtained by fitting a Zimm–Bragg model to the CD data.
