Like English, Korean has different styles of speaking and writing that reflect the
genre, the setting, and the audience. A chat in a gym with a friend employs quite
different words and constructions than a news report to a national TV audience.
This chapter focuses on the use of sentence-final verb endings, whose selection is
sensitive to whether the genre is written or spoken, to whether the setting is
formal or informal, and to how close the speaker feels to the hearer.
The 8000 Most Useful English Words and Phrases with Korean Equivalents in Both Roman & Korean Letters, Especially recommended for the traveler and student, the Concise English-Korean Dictionary offers the most commonly spoken English words and phrases and their Korean equivalents.
To help you have more specialized Korean document serve the needs of learning and research, invite you to refer to the contents of the document "Active Korean 1 Workbook". Hope content useful document for the learning needs and research.
Basic Korean: A Grammar and Workbook comprises an accessible reference grammar and related exercises in a single volume. This workbook presents twenty-five individual grammar points in lively and realistic contexts, covering the core material which students would expect to encounter in their first year of learning Korean. Grammar points are followed by examples and exercises which allow students to reinforce and consolidate their learning. Basic Korean is suitable for both class use as well as independent study.
Statistical methods require very large corpus with high quality. But building large and faultless annotated corpus is a very difficult job. This paper proposes an efficient m e t h o d to construct part-of-speech tagged corpus. A rulebased error correction m e t h o d is proposed to find and correct errors semi-automatically by user-defined rules. We also make use of user's correction log to reflect feedback. Experiments were carried out to show the efficiency of error correction process of this workbench. The result shows that about 63.2 % of tagging errors can be corrected. ...
The automatic extraction of comparative information is an important text mining problem and an area of increasing interest. In this paper, we study how to build a Korean comparison mining system. Our work is composed of two consecutive tasks: 1) classifying comparative sentences into different types and 2) mining comparative entities and predicates.
Noun extraction is very important for many NLP applications such as information retrieval, automatic text classification, and information extraction. Most of the previous Korean noun extraction systems use a morphological analyzer or a Partof-Speech (POS) tagger. Therefore, they require much of the linguistic knowledge such as morpheme dictionaries and rules (e.g. morphosyntactic rules and morphological rules).
This paper describes a grapheme-to-phoneme conversion method using phoneme connectivity and CCV conversion rules. The method consists of mainly four modules including morpheme normalization, phrase-break detection, morpheme to phoneme conversion and phoneme connectivity check. The morpheme normalization is to replace non-Korean symbols into standard Korean graphemes.
This paper describes an approach to identifying the syntactic role of an antecedent in a Korean relative clause, which is essential to structural disambiguation and semantic analysis. In a learning phase, linguistic knowledge such as conceptual co-occurrence patterns and syntactic role distribution of antecedents is extracted from a large-scale corpus. Then, in an application phase, the extracted knowledge is applied in determining the correct syntactic role of an antecedent in relative clauses.
An easy way of translating queries in one language to the other for cross-language information retrieval (IR) is to use a simple bilingual dictionary. Because of the generalpurpose nature of such dictionaries, however, this simple method yields a severe translation ambiguity problem. This paper describes the degree to which this problem arises in Korean-English cross-language IR and suggests a relatively simple yet effective method for disambiguation using mutual information statistics obtained only from the target document collection. ...
This paper proposes how to automatically identify Korean comparative sentences from text documents. This paper first investigates many comparative sentences referring to previous studies and then defines a set of comparative keywords from them. A sentence which contains one or more elements of the keyword set is called a comparative-sentence candidate. Finally, we use machine learning techniques to eliminate non-comparative sentences from the candidates. As a result, we achieved significant performance, an F1-score of 88.54%, in our experiments using various web documents. ...
This paper presents noisy-channel based Korean preprocessor system, which corrects word spacing and typographical errors. The proposed algorithm corrects both errors simultaneously. Using Eojeol transition pattern dictionary and statistical data such as Eumjeol n-gram and Jaso transition probabilities, the algorithm minimizes the usage of huge word dictionaries.
Synchronous Tree Adjoining Grammars can be used for Machine Translation. However, translating a free order language such as Korean to English is complicated. I present a mechanism to translate scrambled Korean sentences into English by combining the concepts of Multi-Component TAGs (MC-TAGs) and Synchronous TAGs (STAGs).

Arts-related real estate markets have paradoxical entry
barriers and advantages. There are barriers inherent
in the uncertainty of demand, zoning issues and the
costs of retrofitting old systems. At the same time,
entry barriers are lowered because the space demand is
flexible and often requires minimal high-end fixtures
Art-making, performance, craft production and
exhibition spaces attract users who want to adapt and
re-create space in flexible ways.

Galactosemia is caused by defects in the galactose metabolic pathway,
which consists of three enzymes, including UDP-galactose-4-epimerase
(GALE). We previously reported nine mutations in Korean patients with
epimerase-deficiency galactosemia. In order to determine the functional
consequences of these mutations, we expressed wild-type and mutant
GALE proteins in 293T cells.
In this paper we investigate named entity transliteration based on a phonetic scoring method. The phonetic method is computed using phonetic features and carefully designed pseudo features. The proposed method is tested with four languages – Arabic, Chinese, Hindi and Korean – and one source language – English, using comparable corpora. The proposed method is developed from the phonetic method originally proposed in Tao et al. (2006). In contrast to the phonetic method in Tao et al.
In 2006 Korean shipbuilding companies got new orders of 19,585,000 CGT, which was
the highest number since 2000. Moreover in the first half of 2007 Korean shipbuilders
have received 51.3% more orders than that of a year ago. Strong demand for new
vessels was expected to continue for the next few years at least, due to expanding
world-wide seaborne trade, especially between China and USA, and increasing need of
new ships to adapt new International Maritime Organization’s requirements.
