  • We propose a latent variable model to enhance historical analysis of large corpora. This work extends prior work in topic modelling by incorporating metadata, and the interactions between the components in metadata, in a general way. To test this, we collect a corpus of slavery-related United States property law judgements sampled from the years 1730 to 1866. We study the language use in these legal cases, with a special focus on shifts in opinions on controversial topics across different regions....

  • Harrison's Internal Medicine Chapter 106. Plasma Cell Disorders Plasma Cell Disorders: Introduction The plasma cell disorders are monoclonal neoplasms related to each other by virtue of their development from common progenitors in the B lymphocyte lineage. Multiple myeloma, Waldenström's macroglobulinemia, primary amyloidosis (Chap. 324), and the heavy chain diseases comprise this group and may be designated by a variety of synonyms such as monoclonal gammopathies, paraproteinemias, plasma cell dyscrasias, and dysproteinemias.

  • Soil contamination has severely increased over the last decades, mainly due to petroleum hydrocarbons, solvents, pesticides, lead and other heavy metals from industrial wastes and human activities. The critical point regarding contaminated soil monitoring is the intrinsic difficulty in defining fixed monitoring variables and indicators as the establishment of any a priori criterion and threshold for soil quality can be still considered subjective.

  • The system of three-dimensional hydrodynamic-environmental models could simulate full advection and dispersion processes of the dissolved and particulate matter as suspended sediment and all oil phases in the realistic marine conditions. The hydrodynamic model provides temperature, salinity and current structure and water level. These variables will be used in the environmental model simulating the advection and diffusion processes for suspended matter concentration, bottom sediment thickness and all oil spill phases in the water and bottom sediment.

  • The Reschovsky and Staiti study [28] interviewed both patients and physicians, and provides considerable insight regarding differences in physical accessibility across the urban-rural continuum. The nationally representative survey was fielded in urban, suburban, and remote rural regions. Persons in remote rural regions had significantly longer travel times to see physicians and specialists than persons in metropolitan areas (2 minutes longer to see a physician and 34 minutes longer to see a specialist).

  • Bernanke and Gertler (1989) focus on the investment decision of rms. There is asymmetric information between lenders and entrepreneurs: while entrepreneurs know the protability of their investment projects, lenders must pay an auditing cost to observe the project's return. This information asymmetry is the key source of persistence in the model. A positive productivity shock increases savings of entrepreneurs and lowers agency costs, making it easier for them to obtain external nance.

  • The different sources of potential confounding in time series studies of air pollution and mortality can be broadly classified as either measured or unmeasured. Important measured confounders include weather variables such as temperature and dewpoint temperature. Daily temperature measurements are readily available for metropolitan areas in the USA and numer- ous studies have demonstrated a relationship between temperature and mortality which is gen- erally positive for warm summer days and negative for cold winter days (e.g. Curriero et al. (2002)).

  • Their hardened hooves and lighter bones enable them to endure long migrations. These adaptive attributes have facilitated their importation and spread by Indian and Arabian merchants across the Red Sea to the drier agro-ecological regions of the Horn of Africa (Loftus and Cunningham 2000). The Large East African Zebu cattle breeds, like the present-day Boran of Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia, and the Butana and Kenana of the Sudan have very similar morphological characteristics to that of the zebu breeds of Asia. They are maintained by mainly pastoral communities in the Horn of Africa....

  • Twenty-five years ago, Georges Köhler and César Milstein invented a means of cloning individual antibodies, thus opening up the way for tremendous advances in the fields of cell biology and clinical diagnostics (1). However, in spite of their early promise, monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) were largely unsuccessful as therapeutic reagents resulting from insufficient activation of human effector functions and immune reactions against proteins of murine origin.

  • This study also aims to offer a more complete view of the many necessary measures to achieve global and coherent actions from donor countries. However, it must be pointed out that just as the choice of measures contained in the MDGs can be arbitrary, so can the selection of variables and economic policies included in this document.

  • The results of studies by Fama and Schwert (1977), Chen, Roll and Ross (1986), Nelson (1976) and Jaffe and Mandelker (1976) pointed to a negative relation between inflation and stock prices. We hypothesize similarly: an increase in the rate of inflation is likely to lead to economic tightening policies, which in turn increases the nominal risk-free rate and hence raises the discount rate in the valuation model (equation 1).

  • The first column of Table 2 (Model 1) shows the results of the maximum likelihood estimate of the logistic model applied to the pool of data from over the five year period studied. The model includes a constant forcing a variable to be left out of each block of characteristics to avoid perfect multicollinearity from occurring. The constant determines the PD of the excluded loans11. The characteristics of the excluded loan are: financial credit, in euros, long term (over five years), without collateral, 1993, construction sector and lent by a bank in a certain region.

Recently, the crystal structure was reported of a portion of the linker between the acyl-transferase (AT) and ketoreductase (KR) domains from module 1 of the erythromycin synthase (6-deoxyerythronolide B synthase), as a pseudo-dimer with the adjacent ketoreductase (KR).

  • All limited firms in Sweden are legally bound to submit an annual report to the Swedish Patent and Registration Office (PRV). This study uses data collected from MM (Market Manager)-Partner, now merged with PAR, a Swedish consulting firm that gathers economic information from PRV. This information is primarily used by decision-makers and stakeholders in Swedish commercial life. Our data comprise all Swedish limited companies active at some point between 1997 and 2005, in total 288,757 firms, and include all variables that can be found in the annual reports, e.g.
