  • Huckster Heaven, in Hollywood, set out to fulfill the adman's dream in every particular. It recognized more credit cards than it offered entrées on the menu. Various atmospheres, complete with authentic decor, were offered: Tahitian, Parisian, even Afro-Cuban for the delectation of the Off-Beat Client. In every case, houris glided to and fro in appropriate native costume, bearing viands calculated

  • Most people are aware of and concerned with the health effects of pesticide residues in the water they drink and the food they eat, but many are surprised to learn that pesticides are commonly found in air and rain. Scientific studies of pesticides in various atmospheric matrices (air, rain, snow, aerosols, and fog) have been ongoing for 40 years. When taken together, these studies, many of which are small and focused, provide a significant contribution to answering the questions when, where, how, and why pesticides are in the atmosphere.

  • The surface treatment by physical method of jute fiber using air plasma was investigated. Fiber was treated by the atmospheric plasma with various conditions of power 50W and different treatment times (from 1 min to 7 min). After treatment, the characteristics of fiber changed remarkably and fiber surface observed by SEM analyze showed a better morphology for adhesion. The result showed that tensile strength and Young’s modulus of jute fiber were slightly improved, however there was a remarkable improvement interface adhesion between fibers and polypropylene (PP) resin.

  • Air travel is continuing to experience the fastest growth among all modes of transport. Increasing total fuel consumption and the potential impacts of aircraft engine emissions on the global atmosphere have motivated the industry, scientific community, and international governments to seek various emissions reduction options. Despite the efforts to understand and mitigate the impacts of aviation emissions, it still remains uncertain whether proposed emissions reduction options are technologically and financially feasible....

  • Air pollution has always been a trans-boundary environmental problem and a matter of global concern for past many years. High concentrations of air pollutants due to numerous anthropogenic activities influence the air quality. There are many books on this subject, but the one in front of you will probably help in filling the gaps existing in the area of air quality monitoring, modelling, exposure, health and control, and can be of great help to graduate students professionals and researchers.

  • While it has been demonstrated that these materials have good sensitivity to polar VOCs, such as alcohols and acetone, 11,12 their rather poor response to nonpolar analytes has been viewed as a major drawback. In this report, we explored two ways to improve the sensor performance of regioregular polythiophene. The first approach is to add a second polymer at the end of the polythiophene chain to form a block copolymer. This second polymer interacts with the analytes in different ways, thus adding another dimensionality to the sensing response of the material.

  • Cyclones are a key element of the atmospheric circulation in the midlatitudes (Carlson, 1998). Cyclogenesis, for which a first conceptual model was presented by the Bergen school (Bjerknes, 1910), occurs most frequently at the polar front. The various ascending and descending airstreams typically associated with these cyclones carry a range of different chemical signatures (Cooper et al., 2002). The so-called warm conveyor belt (WCB) – a strongly ascending airstream ahead of a cyclone’s cold front (Browning et al.

  • Securing and operating today’s complex systems is challenging and demanding. Mission and operational requirements to deliver services and applications swiftly and securely have never been greater. Organizations, having invested precious resources and scarce skills in various necessary security efforts such as risk analysis, certification, accreditation, security architectures, policy development, and other security efforts, can be tempted to neglect or insufficiently develop a cohesive, well-though out operational security testing program. ...

  • Throughout the entire project many assumptions and methodological decisions had to be made along the various calculation steps in the domains of air pollution, epidemiology and economics. On each level, the method of dealing with uncertainty had to be defined. The research group decided that the main calculation ought to apply an “at least” approach, thus consistently selecting methodological assumptions in a way to get a result which may be expected to be “at least” attributable to air pollution.

  • A number of methodological issues related to the assessment of obesity inter- vention and prevention programmes were identified and offer insight into how research protocols can be enhanced to strengthen evidence for obesity interven- tions. Further research is required to understand the merits of the various forms in which interventions (singly and in combination) are delivered and in which circumstances they are effective.

  • Spirituality. Finally, spirituality may be another important variable in a cancer patient’s experience. Spirituality may buffer against the negative effects of life stressors. It has been demonstrated that spirituality can enhance physical and psychological well-being (Oxman, Freeman, & Manheimer, 1995), and predicts various health outcomes (Levin, 1994). In fact, Levin (1994) reviews more than 250 published empirical studies on the largely beneficial health effects of religious or spiritual practice.

  • CRUDE OIL DISTILLATION (FRACTIONATION) 1. Description The first step in the refining process is the separation of crude oil into various fractions or straight-run cuts by distillation in atmospheric and vacuum towers. The main fractions or "cuts" obtained can be classified in order of decreasing volatility into gases, light distillates, middle distillates, gas oils, and residuum. 2. Atmospheric Distillation Tower At the refinery, the desalted crude feedstock is preheated using recovered process heat. ...

  • The soil ecosystem provides services such as carbon sequestration, nutrient cycling, water purification, provisioning of industrial and pharmaceutical goods, and a mitigating sink for chemical and biological agents. However, the soil is subject to various degradation processes. Its relation with the hydrosphere, biosphere, and atmosphere makes the interacting processes even more complex. Moreover, as the soilhuman interactions increase, threats, leading to a series of impacts on soil health, become more important....

  • When seen from space, “Planet Earth” is a mix of clouds, with the majority (two thirds) of the total surface under ocean water with the remaining third of land forming what we call continents, with various degrees of increasing albedo from open water bodies, vegetation, bare soil, rocks, deserts, and snow/ice packs. In a very short time (relative to Earth's age), the modern human civilization has conquered its neighboring space with probes, satellites, and vehicles carrying humans for exploration.

  • There are various types of models in the environmental sciences, and surely there is no unique opinion about the essence of an environmental model. Differences may mainly concern the scope of the models and the modeling methods. Concerning the scope, this book is relatively open; i.e. examples from different branches of environmental science and technology are included, mainly from the hydrosphere and the geosphere, and also from the biosphere and the atmosphere.

  • Research in anoxic environments is a relatively new and rapidly growing branch of science that is of general interest to many students of diverse microbial communities. The term anoxia means absence of atmospheric oxygen, while the term hypoxia refers to O 2 depletion or to an extreme form of “low oxygen.” Both terms anoxia and hypoxia are used in various contexts. It is accepted that the initial microorganisms evolved anaerobically and thrived in an atmosphere without oxygen. The rise of atmospheric oxygen occurred ~2.

  • W Water balance of the Aral Sea – the water balance of the sea depends on the correlation between the inflow of river and groundwaters, atmospheric precipitation, and water losses to evaporation. The structure of the A.S. water balance is a function of various levels of economic development. From 1930 through 1990, the available water resources in the basin were estimated at 115 cu. km annually. Natural water losses in 1930 were 36 cu. km, in 1960 – 13 cu. km, and in 1990 – 7 cu. km. Water consumption in 1930 was 25 cu. km, in 1960 – 48 cu....
