  • The management of patients with vascular disease is complex and requires a multi-disciplinary approach of which nurses play an integral part. Recent years have witnessed the development of vascular nursing in the UK as a specialist area, with appointments of vascular nurse specialists and nurse consultants. Specialist vascular courses are now available for nurses in the UK and vascular nurses have their own professional society. This book aims to provide nurses with the appropriate knowledge to meet the challenge of caring for patients with vascular disease.

  • Vascular ultrasound is a speciality in its own right and vascular surgeons are becoming increasingly dependent on the skills of vascular sonographers for the investigation of patients suffering from peripheral vascular disease. This book aims to provide an understanding of the principles and practice of vascular ultrasound.

  • The role of the placental bed in normal pregnancy and its complications has been intensively investigated for 50 years, following the introduction of a technique for placental bed biopsy. It is now recognized that disorders of the maternal–fetal interface in humans have been implicated in a broad range of pathological conditions, including spontaneous abortion, preterm labor, preterm premature rupture of membranes, preeclampsia, intrauterine growth restriction, abruptio placentae, and fetal death.

  • To determine why some teachers are more effective than others, Bosshardt and Watts (1990) investigated teacher effects on student learning in high school economics classes using fixed- and random-effects models. The teacher characteristics they examined included college credits in economics, non-credit workshops in economics, years of teaching experience, and the extent of teachers’ past instruction in economics. They found that the most effective teachers were those who had completed more courses in economics.

  • This method is real-time PCR, which can be a qualitative or quantitative assay since amplification and detection of amplified products occur simultaneously. Then, typing is performed. Typing is primarily used for epidemiologic investigations, for studies on pathogenesis such as multiple serotype infections, for unusual or especially severe infections, or for treatment approaches such as high titer γ-globulin. The nucleotide sequences from these fragments were determined by a DNA auto sequencer with fluorescent dideoxy chain terminators.

  • Migration of vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs) from the media to intima constitutes a critical step in the development of proliferative vascular diseases. To elucidate the regulatory mechanism of vacular SMC motility, the roles of caldesmon (CaD) and its phosphorylation were investigated. Methods: We have performed Transwell migration assays, immunofluorescence microscopy, traction microscopy and cell rounding assays using A7r5 cells transfected with EGFP (control), EGFP-wtCaD or phosphomimetic CaD mutants, including EGFP-A1A2 (the two PAK sites Ser452...

  • In light of the significant and multifaceted role neuronal, vascular, and inflammatory cells play during degenerative disorders, novel studies that elucidate the role of these cells may greatly further our understanding of disease mechanisms for the development of targeted treatments for a wide spectrum of diseases.

  • Vitrification has been investigated for tissue-engineered bone and blood vessels. Liu & McGrath (2003) explored the potential of vitrification for the cryopreservation of tissueengineered bone constructs consisting of a hydroxyapatite scaffold-cell complex. Cell survival was 92.0% for suspended cells and 43.0% for attached cells. In terms of tissueengineered blood vessel constructs, the effects of vitrification and conventional cryopreservation were compared (Elder et al., 2005). Collagen-based vascular constructs were used as models in this study.

  • Abstract While there have been many reports investigating the biological activity and signaling mechanisms of isoprostanes, their role in biology, particularly in platelets, appears to still be underestimated. Moreover, whether these lipids have their own receptors is still debated, despite multiple reports that discrete receptors for isporpstanes do exist on platelets, vascular tissues, amongst others.

  • During thrombus formation, thrombin, which is abundantly present at sites of vascular injury, activates platelets in part via autocrine-produced ADP. We investigated the signaling pathways by which thrombin and ADP in synergy induced platelet Ca 2+ elevation and procoagulant activity, and we monitored the consequences for the coagulation process.

  • Children rarely present with the symptoms classically associated with heart disease in adults (chest pain, shortness of breath, swollen ankles) – rather they present with a variety of symptoms such as failure to thrive, frequent chest infections, or unexplained ‘funny turns’. A careful history and examination is key, as are special investigations such as CXR, ECG and pulse oximetry. An echocardiogram is the gold standard investigation required to confirm the diagnosis.
