  • To supplement full scale dynamic testing of vehicle crashworthiness, mathematical models and laboratory tests (such as those using a Hyge sled or a vehicle crash simulator) are frequently employed. The objective of these tests is the prediction of changes in overall safety performance as vehicle structural and occupant restraint parameters are varied. To achieve this objective, it is frequently desirable to characterize vehicle crash pulses such that parametric optimization of the crash performance can be defined.

  • The automotive industry is currently developing sensor-based solutions to increase vehicle safety in speed zones where driver error is most common: at lower speeds, when the driver is stuck in traffic, and at higher speeds, when the driver is cruising on a long stretch of highway (see Figure 3). These systems, known as Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS), use a combination of advanced sensors, such as stereo cameras and long- and short-range RADAR, combined with actuators, control units, and integrating software, to enable cars to monitor and respond to their surroundings.

  • Bolted body panels have become increasingly common over recent years, with many vehicles now using bolted front wings, front panel assemblies, bonnet slam panels and bumper bar supports. Obviously accident damage on such cars is much easier to repair, allowing simpler removal/refit of panels, and also easier preparation and painting in some cases. Panels can be prepared, primed and painted "off-the-car" if a good colour match is possible. A close visual inspection usually shows exactly where a particular panel is bolted.

  • For the past hundred years, innovation within the automotive sector has brought major technological advances, leading to safer, cleaner, and more affordable vehicles. But for the most part, since Henry Ford introduced the moving assembly line, the changes have been incremental, evolutionary. Now, in the early decades of the 21st century, the industry appears to be on the cusp of revolutionary change—with potential to dramatically reshape not just the competitive landscape but also the way we interact with vehicles and, indeed, the future design of our roads and cities.

Title brands— indicators, symbols or other notations—are printed on the certificate of title to indicate the history or condition of a vehicle. A title brand will indicate significant damage to the vehicle and brand it as “junk” or “salvage.” Ideally, a title brand remains on record for the life of the vehicle. ...

  • • Limitations on “AS IS” sales of used cars: Low-income consumers need a reliable car for transportation. Unfortunately, consumers are often sold vehicles with known defects that are hidden from the purchaser. While most states have lemon laws that protect the purchaser of a new car, few states have effective used car warranty laws. In most states dealers will commonly sell used cars “AS IS” in order to disclaim the implied warranties that otherwise apply. Some states have used car lemon laws or limit disclaimer of warranties in used car transactions.
