  • Theoretical study of earthquakes as well as practical application is actually important to determine the earthquake hazard assessment and risk in a specific region. This is probably the most important contribution of seismology to society. recent earthquake showed the inadequacy of a large part of the building construction in and around the epicentral area, so the study of earthquakes has become and more important.

  • Cinema is meant and believed to entertain, to take the viewer to a world that is starkly different from the real one, a world which provides escape from the daily grind of life. Cinema is a popular media of mass consumption which plays a key role in moulding opinions, constructing images and reinforcing dominant cultural values. The paper deals with representations of women characters in mainstream Bollywood movies.

  • Control analysis of the glycolytic flux was carried out in two fast-growth tumor cell types of human and rodent origin (HeLa and AS-30D, respect-ively). Determination of the maximal velocity (Vmax) of the 10 glycolytic enzymes from hexokinase to lactate dehydrogenase revealed that hexokin-ase (153–306 times) and phosphfructokinase-1 (PFK-1) (22–56 times) had higher over-expression in rat AS-30D hepatoma cells than in normal freshly isolated rat hepatocytes.

  • The publication of the Hipparcos and Tycho Catalogues in 1997 transformed astrometry, and as a consequence astronomers’ perception of astrometry. What had before often been regarded as a somewhat quaint specialty of limited relevance to modern astrophysics, was suddenly seen to produce a wealth of data of immediate practical use. The ready availability of many thousand precise trigonometric stellar distances and the access to an accurate and dense optical reference frame have changed the way astronomers think about certain problems and plan their experiments....

  • Models for Dynamic Systems. Since their introduction by Isaac Newton in the seventeenth century, differential equations have provided concise mathematical models for many dynamic systems of importance to humans. By this device, Newton was able to model the motions of the planets in our solar system with a small number of variables and parameters. Given a ®nite number of initial conditions (the initial positions and velocities of the sun and planets will do) and these equations, one can uniquely determine the positions and velocities of the planets for all time....

  • Geometry and Trigonometry Geometry and Trigonometry Although many people find geometry and trigonometry intimidating, the small investment required to understand a few basic principles in these disciplines can pay large dividends. For example, what if you needed to find the distance between two points, or rotate one object around another? These small tasks are needed more often than you may think, and are easier to accomplish than you may realize. Movement Along an Angle Earlier we discussed velocity as a vector quantity because it combined magnitude and direction.

  • The chapter on uniform flow in open channels is basic knowledge required for all hydraulics students. In this chapter, we shall assume the flow to be uniform, unless specified otherwise. This chapter guides students how to determine the rate of discharge, the depth of flow, and the velocity. The slope of the bed and the cross-sectional area remain constant over the given length of the channel under the uniform-flow conditions. The same holds for the computation of the most economical cross section when designing the channel.

The pitch surfaces for the bevel gear are frustums of cones.

  • Two-axle vehicles without trailer Low speed or kinematic steering is, as already stated, defined as the motion of a wheeled vehicle determined by pure rolling1 of the wheels. The velocities of the centres of all the wheels lie in their midplane, that is the sideslip angles αi are vanishingly small. In these conditions, the wheels cannot exert any cornering force to balance the centrifugal force due to the curvature of the path. Kinematic steering is possible only if the velocity is vanishingly small.

  • Distribution Management (DM), formerly known as Velocity Management (VM), is an Army initiative to dramatically improve the performance of key logistics processes: distribution, repair, stockage determination, and financial management. This monograph describes how the then Velocity Management initiative was used to develop and implement a new algorithm for computing inventories maintained by Army supply support activities (SSAs). The new algorithm is called dollar cost banding (DCB), and it departs in important ways from the methodology that the Army had been using.
