  • Pulmonary embolism is a serious, potentially life-threatening cardiopulmonary disease that occurs due to partial or total obstruction of the pulmonary arterial bed. Pulmonary embolism constitutes 5-25% of in-hospital deaths, and mortality is decreased from 30% to 8% with early treatment. Therefore, risk factors should be identified and treatment should be planned to decrease the risk of mortality. Clinical findings, routine laboratory data, electrocardiogram, chest X-ray, and arterial blood gases are not sufficient to diagnose or rule out pulmonary embolus.

  • The term thrombophilia describes a range of conditions in which there is an increased tendency, frequently recurrent, for thrombus formation in the venous as well as in the arterial vascular systems. Thrombophilia is caused by inherited or acquired conditions and may cause symptoms related to the place in which the thrombosis occurred, the extent of thrombosis, and whether embolization occurred in other organs.

  • In recent years a number of OECD countries experienced a rapid increase in housing market activity, which coincided with a period of low real and nominal interest rates. The link between the two is intuitive: low interest rates make credit cheaper and increase the demand for housing. Some scholars argue that expansionary monetary policy has been signicantly responsible for this low level of interest rates and the subsequent house price boom (Hume and Sentance (2009) and Taylor (2009)).

  • Molecular cloning has identified eight metabotropic glutamate receptor (mGluR) subtypes, each with distinct patterns of expression. However, the characteristic roles of these different mGluRs in physiological processes are not well understood. Identification of subtype-specific compounds may potentially act as therapeutic agents for the treatment of a wide range of conditions (including progressive brain disease, epilepsy and cerebral ischemia) all of which are associated with abnormal mGLuR activation.

  • Removal of lung parenchyma results in reduction of the pulmonary capillary bed. The decrease in pulmonary capillary bed is well tolerated by patients with otherwise normal lungs but in patients with pulmonary dysfunction this may result in postoperative pulmonary hypertension. Unlike most general surgical procedures where cardiovascular complications are the major cause of perioperative morbidity and mortality, in thoracic surgical population respiratory complications are the predominant cause of perioperative morbidity and mortality (9,10). ...

  • Overall welfare effects are slightly positive for the EU-27. Whereas total agricultural income would decline due to lower milk prices on average, the EU dairy industry would benefit as prices of dairy products are expected to decline less than raw milk prices (i.e. input costs decreasing more than revenues). Impacts on the FEOGA budget would arise mainly from additional export subsidies for butter and moderate losses of tariff revenues.

  • In open or laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, residual cancer relates with PSA failure. RTURPCa is probably less invasive than radical prostatectomy and more flexible in the point that the second operation can be indicated and easily done to eliminate residual cancer when PSA shows a successive rise. The second RTUR-PCa was required in 46 patients. But this is considered just a technical issue because the need for the second operation has decreased as the surgeon has become experienced.

  • Information about the localization of cancer from biopsy specimens is very helpful to plan the manner of resection. Although an experienced resectionist can remove almost all prostate tissues transurethrally, aggressive resection can be applied where the cancer was detected by biopsy to achieve the radicality of the operation. Erectile function was preserved in about 60% of the patients in the present study. Preservation of the cavernous nerve can be achieved by leaving some prostate tissue not to be resected around the 4 or 8 o’clock position not to injure the nerve.

  • Non-invasive Breslow index determination would allow one-time procedure for melanoma clinical management which would be of utmost medical interest for several reasons: unimpaired sentinel lymph node status, low morbidity, pain and stress associated to surgical excision margins. However, as explained throughout the current chapter, such a determination requires melanoma diagnosis prior to Breslow determination.

  • In this study, we make use of a complete dataset of property trades by institutional-grade REITs who are legally mandated to report such trades to the SEC in their 10-K and 10-Q reports, thus providing both complete trading information and eliminating selection bias. We augment this information with a dataset of property trades made by portfolio managers of private entities, such as commingled real-estate funds, who have legally committed to disclose this information to a private data collector under a strict non-disclosure agreement.
