Biofuels such as bioethanol are becoming a viable alternative
to fossil fuels. Utilizing agricultural biomass for the production
of biofuel has drawn much interest in many science and
engineering disciplines. As one of the major crops, maize
offers promise in this regard. Compared to other crops with
biofuel potential, maize can provide both starch (seed) and
cellulosic (stover) material for bioethanol production.
One concern about the voluntary offset market as it continues to grow is the possibility
that suppliers may sell the same reductions to multiple buyers, because there is no central
authority to track their transactions. Related to this, questions can arise in some instances
about who “owns” emission reductions and who in fact has the right to sell them. In some
cases, multiple parties may conceivably lay claim to the same reduction.
Since a falling apple around 1665 worked its magic in the imaginative mind of a
youthful farmer at Woolsthorpe in Lincolnshire, the meaning of the word action and
of the equal and opposite reaction, has been investigated in science and technology.
More than 300 years ago this irreversible process had consequences that led to the
development of a theory of gravitation still used by space agencies even today.
In 2008, the price of green power for residential customers in utility programs ranged from
-1.0¢/kWh (a savings compared to standard service) to 8.8¢/kWh above standard electricity
rates, with an average premium of 1.8¢/kWh and median of 1.5¢/kWh. These premiums have
been adjusted to account for any fuel-cost exemptions granted to green power program
In 2008, the utility programs with the lowest premiums for energy derived from
new renewable sources had premiums ranging from -1.0¢/kWh (a savings) to 0.9¢/kWh. On
average, consumers spend about $5.
Abstract Here I tackle three major issues, climate change, financial crisis and
national security, to disclose the weak points of current remedies and propose sustainable
solutions. Global warming and the unexpected 2008 financial crisis will
undoubtedly impact all nations. Treating those two critical issues solely by painkiller
solutions will fail because only adverse consequences are healed, not their
causes. Therefore, all sources of issues must be treated at the same time by enhancing
collaboration between politicians and scientists....
Although a steadily increasing number of protein±ligand
docking experiments have been performed successfully,
there are only few studies concerning protein±sugar inter-actions. In this study, we investigate the interaction of wheat
germ agglutinin (WGA) withN-acetylglucosamine and a
number of its derivatives and predict the binding free ener-gies using ¯exible docking techniques.
Chapter 10 - Arbitrage pricing theory and multifactor models of risk and return. We begin by showing how the decomposition of risk into market versus firm-specific influences that we introduced in earlier cha pters can be extended to deal with the multifaceted nature of systematic risk. Multifactor models of security returns can be used to measure and manage exposure to each of many economy-wide factors such as business-cycle risk, interest or inflation rate risk, energy price risk, and so on.
