The general meaning of gene therapy is to correct defective genes that are responsible
for disease development. The most common form of gene therapy involves the
insertion, alteration or removal of genes within an individual's cells and biological
tissues. Many of gene transfer vectors are modified viruses. The ability for the delivery
of therapeutic genes made them desirable for engineering virus vector systems.
Recently, the viral vectors in laboratory and clinical use have been based on RNA and
DNA viruses processing very different genomic structures and host ranges.
Since the second edition of Dengue haemorrhagic fever: diagnosis, treatment, prevention and control was published by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1997, the magnitude of the dengue problem has increased dramatically and has extended geographically to many previously unaffected areas. It was then, and remains today, the most important arthropod-borne viral disease of humans.

Biochemical prevention and treatment of viral infections – A new paradigm in medicine for infectious diseases
We planned the first edition of this book on a ‘need to know’
basis, its primary object being to provide students and medical
and dental practitioners with the knowledge essential for an
informed approach to the prevention and treatment of viral
infections. We aimed also at supplying just enough basic virology
to underpin the more practical aspects—clinical manifestations,
epidemiology, pathogenesis, immune responses, and so
forth. And not least, we tried our best to make the text as readable
as is possible, given the highly technical nature of some of
Adenoviruses have been recognized as opportunistic and significant viral pathogens in
immunocompromised patients such as recipients of hematopoietic stem cells or other solid
organs treated with immunosuppressive agents, and among patients with acquired
immunodeficiency syndrome. These patients are incapable of developing a normal immune
response. Reactivation of adenoviruses in the impaired immunological response leads to
acute or persistent infections with high morbidity or even mortality in these patients.
Similarly to retroviral vectors, the design of lentiviral vector packaging systems has evolved
to minimize the risk of RCPs generation towards maximum safety. Currently, three
generations of lentiviral vectors are considered. The first-generation (Naldini et al. 1996)
closely resembles the three plasmid packaging system of simple retroviruses, except for the
fact that the gag-pol expression is driven by a heterologous promoter instead of the viral
LTR; additionally, the gp120 HIV-1’s envelope was replaced by VSV-G’s.
The second part of the book is dedicated to the pathogenesis of myocarditis. The
chapters in this part also discuss some clinical findings, but mostly focus on the
underlying mechanism of the disease, using in-depth data from mouse models. Some
of the chapters focus on host immune response. For example, one chapter reviews the
role of pattern-recognition receptors in myocarditis, and another chapter examines the
role of lymphocyte effectors in myocarditis pathogenesis.
Many studies of system logs treat
them as sources of failure events. Log analysis of system
errors typically involves classifying log messages based
on the preset severity level of the reported error, and on
tokens and their positions in the text of the message
. More sophisticated analysis has included the study
of the statistical properties of reported failure events to
localize and predict faults and mining pat-
terns from multiple log events .

Allergic diseases are characterized by a Th2 inflammatory response involving several
possible modulator factors (genetics and environmental factors), subject-related or antigenrelated
modulators such as adjuvants, solubility in the microenvironment of mucosa, size of
the sensitization agent, mucosa permeability, viral infections, and the greater or lesser
ability of effectors cells to liberate mediators.
Other factors include atmospheric pollution, exposure to tobacco, lifestyle-related diet and
hygiene habits and maternal effects.
The field of insect pathology has grown steadily since its inception as a formal academic discipline in the mid-1940s
(Steinhaus, 1949). Concomitantly, the applied side of insect pathology has also grown considerably resulting in the
commercial development of bacterial, viral, fungal and nematode entomopathogens as microbial control agents.
The clinical interface of orthodontics and paediatric dentistry is
broad. Increasingly, for the undergraduate, teaching and
examinations in these specialties are combined to promote a
holistic approach to dental care for the child and adolescent patient.
This concise colour guide aims, therefore, to cover major clinical
aspects of orthodontic and paediatric dental practice in a format
suitable for quick reference and revision purposes.
Under the old rules, the only way to get “published” was to have your press release “picked
up” by the media.
We’ve come a long way. The Web has turned all kinds of companies, non-profits, and even rock
bands and political campaigners into just-in-time and just-right publishers. Organizations –
the new publishers – create press releases that deliver useful information directly onto the
screens of their buyers.
Until recently, nobody ever thought of companies as publishers; newspapers and magazines
published the news. But that’s all changing.
Gene therapy has the potential to be a tailor-made therapeutic with increased specificity and decreased side effects that can offer a "cure" for many disorders. The aim of this book is to provide up-to-date reviews of the rapidly growing field of gene therapy. Chapters cover a large range of topics including methods of gene delivery, and identification of targets with several papers on cancer gene therapy.

Recent studies have used as a reference group women
who had no exposure to tobacco smoke - that is, they have
never actively or passively smoked. These studies in most
cases have reported increases in breast cancer risk for
women who smoked or were passively exposed to tobacco
smoke compared to reference women who were never
exposed. Critics of this approach cite studies that indicate
the reference women who have never been exposed to
tobacco smoke are healthier, in general.
Encephalitises are a group of inflammatory human and animal diseases of brain caused essentially by different pathogens. In spite of evident success in approaches for prevention, diagnostics and treatment during the last decades, the encephalitises of different etiology still constitute a menace for thousands of people all around the world. In this book the different aspects of encephalitises of different etiology are discussed such as diagnostics, treatment and clinical management of patients.
