  • This book has an aim to present latest applications, trends and developments of virtual reality technologies in three humanities disciplines: in medicine, psychology and pedagogy. Studies show that people in both educational as well as in the medical therapeutic range expect more and more that modern media are included in the corresponding demand and supply structures. For the Internet and various mobile media, associated research and application projects now have fixed key words such as "E-learning" and "E-Mental Health" or "M-Learning", "M-Mental Health"....

  • Virtual instructors can be used in several applications, ranging from trainers in simulated worlds to non player characters for virtual games. In this paper we present a novel algorithm for rapidly prototyping virtual instructors from human-human corpora without manual annotation. Automatically prototyping full-fledged dialogue systems from corpora is far from being a reality nowadays.

  • Natural language generation (NLG) systems are notoriously hard to evaluate. On the one hand, simply comparing system outputs to a gold standard is not appropriate because there can be multiple generated outputs that are equally good, and finding metrics that account for this variability and produce results consistent with human judgments and task performance measures is difficult (Belz and Gatt, 2008; Stent et al., 2005; Foster, 2008). On the other hand, lab-based evaluations with human subjects to assess each aspect of the system’s functionality are expensive and time-consuming. ...

  • Previous approaches to instruction interpretation have required either extensive domain adaptation or manually annotated corpora. This paper presents a novel approach to instruction interpretation that leverages a large amount of unannotated, easy-to-collect data from humans interacting with a virtual world. We compare several algorithms for automatically segmenting and discretizing this data into (utterance, reaction) pairs and training a classifier to predict reactions given the next utterance.

  • Welcome to the paperback edition of The Lexus and the Olive Tree. Readers of the original hardback version of the book will notice that several things have changed in this new version. But what has not changed is the core thesis of this book: that globalization is not simply a trend or a fad but is, rather, an international system.

  • The field of macroeconomic theory has evolved rapidly over the last quarter century. A quick glance at the discipline’s leading journals reveals that virtually the entire academic profession has turned to interpreting macroeconomic data with models that are based on microeconomic foundations. Unfortunately, these models often require a relatively high degree of mathematical sophistication, leaving them largely inaccessible to the interested lay person (students, newspaper columnists, business economists, and policy makers).

  • restrictions. AR also doesn't consume as much time and effort in many applications because it's not required to construct the entire virtual scene, which can be tedious and time-consuming. In this book, several new and emerging application areas of AR are presented. It is divided into three sections. The first section contains applications in outdoor and mobile AR, such as construction, restoration, security, and surveillance. The second section deals with AR in medical, biological, and human bodies.

  • We use computers in our daily lives, sometimes becoming so engrossed in the virtual world that we stop being conscious of the computer’s presence. Computers’ increasing capabilities, such as faster processing, larger capacity, and wide-band networking, make it possible for us to interact seamlessly with them. The field of human-computer interaction is the study of interaction between people (users) and computers. It is often regarded as the intersection of computer science, behavioral science, design, psychology, sociology, and several other fields.

  • The chapters in this book reflect leading edge ideas, reflections and observations. Even though the modern era of sleep research evolved from Aserinksky’s observations of rapid eye movements in the sleep of babies, most work is nonetheless done in adults. There is much less formal work done in youngsters and virtually none in utero and pregnancy itself is virtually unexplored. So, Dr Miller et al’s chapter reviewing sleep in pregnancy is particularly welcome as it incorporates current thinking in how disordered sleep impacts other adult pathological processes.

Starting with a mixture of curiosity and chagrin, the field has grown into a substantial enterprise which impacts (and utilizes resources from) virtually every field of biomedical research. Research in RNAi derives from a set of apparently unconnected observations: strange pigment patterns in plants, unexpected failures and successes in antisense and overexpression studies, small regulatory RNAs in bacteria.
