  • A plant nutrient is a chemical element that is essential for plant growth and reproduction. Essential element is a term often used to identify a plant nutrient. The term nutrient implies essentiality, so it is redundant to call these elements essential nutrients. Commonly, for an element to be a nutrient, it must fit certain criteria. The principal criterion is that the element must be required for a plant to complete its life cycle. The second criterion is that no other element substitutes fully for the element being considered as a nutrient.

Among adults without a formal account, those in Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean are the most likely to cite missing documentation as a reason for not having one. Those in Europe and Central Asia have the least trust in banks. Women tend to report using someone else’s account significantly more than do men, highlighting the challenges that women may encounter in account ownership.

  • The reason that such a basic shape succeeds as a piece of art is its placement within nature. Despite its considerable size, the buckyball’s visual impact is quite subtle due to the relatively thin 2” (5 cm) tubing and the natural color of the corroding steel. The trees intersecting the buckyball dissolve the mathematical shape, symbolizing quantum physics’ revelation that matter has no clear-cut boundary. On a more...

  • There is a conflict, a struggle in everyone between these two directions. One solution is to try to put aside reality: have contempt for it. Two very common ways people have contempt are: We can either fight with the world aggressively or run away from it into a world of our own that is more comforting. “Everybody,” wrote Mr. Siegel, “is to a degree icebound, and crippled, and stuck, and jammed, and shut in….What is it for a person to be free?” People of the arctic, like people outside the arctic, have not known entirely what it is to be free. For example, there is what...

  • Flowcharts provide a visual representation of a process or processes which often allow a better understanding of how the process is intended to work. Project communications may be extremely complex depending on the size and scope of the project and the number of stakeholders. A flowchart provides all stakeholders with a better understanding of the steps involved with the distribution of all project communications. The communication flowchart below was created to aid in project communication. This flowchart provides a framework for the project team to follow for this project.

  • The clinical care was based primarily on screening of women at health-center level by nurses using visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA), with visual inspection with Lugol’s iodine (VILI) being added to the screening algorithm later in the project. Since it was not considered feasible or cost- effective to offer treatment at every facility offering screening, women were referred to the district hospital for further management after a positive screening test. Nurses at the district hospital carried out cryotherapy, and more complicated cases were referred to the provincial hospital.

  • Endoscopy is a fast moving field, and new techniques are constantly emerging. Gastrointestinal endoscopy has a central role in the evaluation of gastrointestinal complaints and in the diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal diseases. It is a very safe procedure in the general population as demonstrated by numerous studies. Several data provide a better understanding of pathogenic mechanisms. In recent decades, gastrointestinal endoscopy has evolved and branched out from a visual diagnostic modality to impressive interventional capabilities.

  • Central Serous Chorioretinopathy This primarily affects males between the ages of 20 and 50. Leakage of serous fluid from the choroid causes small, localized detachment of the retinal pigment epithelium and the neurosensory retina. These detachments produce acute or chronic symptoms of metamorphopsia and blurred vision when the macula is involved. They are difficult to visualize with a direct ophthalmoscope because the detached retina is transparent and only slightly elevated.

  • Raised CSF Pressure Headache Raised CSF pressure is well recognized as a cause of headache. Brain imaging can often reveal the cause, such as a space-occupying lesion. NDPH due to raised CSF pressure can be the presenting symptom for patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension (pseudotumor cerebri) without visual problems, particularly when the fundi are normal. Persistently raised intracranial pressure can trigger chronic migraine. These patients typically present with a history of generalized headache that is present on waking and improves as the day goes on.

  • Dermoscopy, also called dermatoscopy, epiluminescence microscopy or skin surface microscopy, was developed in the 1990s in order to augment the early diagnosis of melanoma. First technologies allowed the observer to examine pigmented skin lesions covered by a drop of oil and a glass slide through a stereo microscope. Then dermoscopy developed into a hand-held lighted magnifier to analyze skin lesions by observing newly defined and descriptively named subsurface structures: eg, dots, streaks, veils, and networks.

  • The diagnosis? Eye-ear dissociation. The cause? Inappropriate training of the auditory brain cortex (see the previous Listening chapter). People can be perfect readers, but, at the same time, poor listeners. (The contrary – the ears understand, but the eyes cannot read – exists too: illiteracy.) To neuroscientists, this is not surprising; eyes and ears are different entry ports for distinct elaboration and storage sites in the brain. Training the visual brain areas at the back of the head (see Figure 3.3) has little influence on the performance of the auditory brain areas.
