  • Pottery and ceramics have been an important part of human culture for thousands of years. From prehistoric storage jars to tiles on the space shuttles, pottery and ceramics have played a key role in innumerable human endeavors. The art of ceramics is one of the oldest known, dating to prehistoric times. Once heated (fired) to between 350⁰ and 800⁰C, the clay is converted to ceramic and will never dissolve again.

  • In the wake of energy crisis due to rapid growth of industries, urbanization, transportation, and human habit, the efficient transfer of heat could play a vital role in energy saving. Industries, household requirements, offices, transportation are all dependent on heat exchanging equipment. Considering these, the present book has incorporated different sections related to general aspects of heat transfer phenomena, convective heat transfer mode, boiling and condensation, heat transfer to two phase flow and heat transfer augmentation by different means....

  • Ethan Marcotte wrote an introductory article about the approach, “Responsive Web Design,” for A List Apart. It stems from the notion of responsive architectural design, whereby a room or space automatically adjusts to the number and flow of people within it: “Recently, an emergent discipline called “responsive architecture” has begun asking how physical spaces can respond to the presence of people passing through them.

  • Temperature Measurement of Fluids Low Velocity Gas Contact sensors Assume that a gas, with a temperature, T., flows in a tube with a flow-velocity below about 20 m/s, as shown in Figure 17.1(a) . In the tube there is a sheathed sensor, whose sensitive part, at temperature, TT , is placed in the sheath bottom. This case corresponds to a thermocouple with the measuring junction welded into the sheath bottom . Also let the temperature ofthe internal surface ofthe tube wall be TW , while the length to diameter ratio of the sensor sheath is assumed to be so large that...

  • It may have already occurred to you that this "toughest job you'll ever love seems almost impossible. Look at some of the obstacles you may be facing. Your students are numerous; many may be older than you. Textbooks are scarce, and again, many may be older than you. The physical conditions are austere, with a tin roof that creaks as the temperature rises and obliterates all other sound when the rains come. Pictures and posters disappear from the classroom walls. Desks are too few. The blackboard has been worn to a light grey and chalk stubs are...

  • In addition to ventilation, indoor temperature and humidity conditions, which can change both diurnally and seasonally, have the potential to substantially affect the emissions of VOCs from building materials and alter occupant exposure. In large-scale chamber experiments with new carpet systems, sheet vinyl flooring and wall paint, the air temperature was increased from 23 o C to about 30 o C over a period of 60 h (Hodgson, 1999).

  • Practical Applications of Pyrometers When describing different types of pyrometers in Chapters 9 and 10 it was assumed that they operate in ideal conditions . Pyrometer readings, which are measurements of the true target temperature, Tt , are strongly influenced by real, practical, industrial operating conditions as shown in a simplified way in Figure 11 .1 .

  • Most of the VOCs probably derived from indoor sources. However, the wall cavity was an apparent source of acetaldehyde, toluene and xylenes and the belly space was a source of 2-butanone, lower volatility aldehydes and aromatic hydrocarbons. Indoor minus outdoor VOC concentrations varied with time. Adjusted formaldehyde concentrations exhibited the most temporal variability with concentrations ranging from 25 µg m-3 to 128 µg m-3 and the lowest concentrations occurring in winter months when indoor RH was low.

  • In 1998, it was first reported that a silica material with large, uniform mesopores arranged into a two-demensional hexagonal structure is synthesized using triblock copolymer and oligomer templates poly (ethylene oxide), (EO)n. This silica was denoted SBA-15. Up to now, it is believed that ordered mesopores of SBA-15 are connected through complementary pores (microporores and small mesopores) in the siliceous pore walls. SBA-15 can be readily synthesized using cheap materials and it shows attractive structural properties, very good hydrothemal stability.
