  • The atomic absorption spectrometry uses absorption of light of intrinsic wavelengths by atoms. All atoms are classified into those having low energies and those having high energies. The state having low energies is called the ground state and the state having high energies is called the excited state. The atom in the ground state absorbs external energies and is put in the excited state. For example, sodium is mainly in two excited states, having higher energies by 2.2eV and 3.6eV respectively than in the ground state, as shown in Fig. 1.1.

  • When water or soil has the presence of a metal at a certain level, the metal can inhibit or stimulate the absorption of other metals in plants. Therefore, the study on competitive absorption among metals in plants is very necessary. The aim of this study is to find out the competitive absorption between Cu2+ and Pb2+ from polluted soil to lettuce.

  • Plant response to reduced water availability and other abiotic stress (e.g. metals) have been analysed through changes in water absorption and transport mechanisms and also by molecular and genetic approach. A relatively new aspects of fruit nutrition are presented in order to provide the basis for the improvement of some fruit quality traits. The involvement of hormones, nutritional and proteomic plant profiles together with some structure/function of sexual components have also been addressed.

  • Sodium concentration in irrigation water replaces calcium by the process of Base Exchange, therefore reduces soil permeability. Furthermore, excess salinity in groundwater used for irrigation decreased plants osmotic activity and interfere water absorption and nutrients from the soil. Nearly 5% of groundwater from the study site exceeds the desirable limit (1000 mg L-1) of chloride. The natural source of chloride is due to the weathering of phosphate mineral apatite present in granites.

  • From time to time we all encounter problems in the manufacture of baked products. Sometimes they are seen as defects in the baked product which arise for no obvious reasons. On other occasions we simply need to understand what are the most important criteria to consider if we have to or want to change ingredients or processing conditions. Solving baking problems has always been the province of the bakery ‘experts’, those mysterious persons who always seems to know how to restore the loss of quality, or what recipe and process changes to introduce to achieve a given quality.

  • MINERAL NUTRIENTS ARE ELEMENTS acquired primarily in the form of inorganic ions from the soil. Although mineral nutrients continually cycle through all organisms, they enter the biosphere predominantly through the root systems of plants, so in a sense plants act as the “miners” of Earth’s crust (Epstein 1999). The large surface area of roots and their ability to absorb inorganic ions at low concentrations from the soil solution make mineral absorption by plants a very effective process.

  • SURVIVAL ON LAND POSES SOME SERIOUS CHALLENGES to terrestrial plants, foremost of which is the need to acquire and retain water. In response to these environmental pressures, plants evolved roots and leaves. Roots anchor the plant and absorb water and nutrients; leaves absorb light and exchange gases. As plants increased in size, the roots and leaves became increasingly separated from each other in space. Thus, systems evolved for long-distance transport that allowed the shoot and the root to efficiently exchange products of absorption and assimilation.

  • Baking Soda: Sodium bicarbonate is a product that can be used as a natural fungicide for black spot, powdery mildew and brown patch by mixing 4 teaspoons (approximately 1 rounded tablespoon) per gallon of water along with one teaspoon of mild liquid soap or horticultural oil and spraying foliage. Be careful to keep the spray on the foliage and not on the soil as much as possible. Baking soda is composed of sodium and bicarbonate ñ both are necessary in the soil but only in very small amounts. Potassium bicarbonate is a good alternative for those concerned about sodium....

  • HIGHER PLANTS ARE AUTOTROPHIC ORGANISMS that can synthesize their organic molecular components out of inorganic nutrients obtained from their surroundings. For many mineral nutrients, this process involves absorption from the soil by the roots (see Chapter 5) and incorporation into the organic compounds that are essential for growth and development. This incorporation of mineral nutrients into organic substances such as pigments, enzyme cofactors, lipids, nucleic acids, and amino acids is termed nutrient assimilation....

  • The chemical properties of organics of health concern – hydrophobic and not water soluble - results in a low bioavailability to plants. Plant growth is dependent on the water solubility of nutrients and minerals and water is the transporting vector. Organics with a low water solubility will therefore not be taken up by plants. The presence of organic environmental pollutants, like dioxins and PCBs in agricultural crops is more the result of atmospheric deposition than direct absorption from contaminated soil.

  • Polymer blends containing nylon-6 and polypropylene (PP) were prepared by using a single screw extruder. Three different types of maleic anhydride modified PP (PPMA06, PPMA1and PPMA05) were used as compabilizers to examine their effects. The properties included tensile strength, Izod impact strength, torque rheometry and extent of water absorption of the resulting blends were measured and the morphology was characterized by using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The crystallization behavior of blends was analyzed by monitoring differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction.

  • Alberta’s energy industry has been using the technology for more than 20 years as a method of producing oil from depleted fields. That means Alberta has the current technology and experience needed for wider-scale implementation. We also know CCS has the potential to significantly reduce Alberta’s industrial GHGs—particularly in the oil sands. Research shows the province’s geology is well-suited for storage.

  • Hydrogels composed of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), polyethylenglycol (PEG) and kappacarrageenan (KC) were prepared by radiation crosslinking method. The equilibrium water absorption of hydrogel PVP/KC (A) and PVP/PEG/KC (B) were 45 and 85 g(H2O)/g dried gel, respectively. The n values of the equation Mt /M = ktn were determined to be of 0.6396 for hiđrogel A and 0.9984 for hydrogel B. The water transport mechanism follows the fickian diffusion for hydrogel A, while relaxation diffusion is dominated for hydrogel B. The water vaporization of hiđrogels was also investigated.
